Duties to include but not limited to the following: General Clinical Responsibilities:
(1) Uses advanced knowledge of and skill in applying a wide range of theories, principles, and methodologies in the practice of audiology to diverse patient populations
(2) Evaluates patients to determine the nature, type, and severity of hearing loss and tinnitus using in-depth record reviews, health history interviews, standardized questionnaires, and a battery of audiological diagnostic tests;
(3) Conducts compensation and pension examinations and provides sound medical opinions when requested, the results of which will be utilized in the assessment of hearing impairment for medico-legal purposes;
(4) Practices independent clinical judgement and adapts clinical procedures and techniques to accommodate unique patient requirements;
(5) Provides professional advice, counseling, and recommendations for treatment of hearing loss and tinnitus to patients and their families;
(6) Establishes candidacy for hearing aids and other assistive listening devices based on type and degree of hearing loss as well as the individual's physical, cognitive, and communication needs;
(7) Provides audiological treatment through dispensing of amplification devices following best practice guidelines, including programming of devices using real-ear measurements and evaluating functional post-fitting status;
(8) Consults and collaborates with primary care providers, otologists, mental health professionals, and other healthcare practitioners as part of a team to address the global needs of the patient;
(9) Incumbent plans, conducts, and coordinates auditory (aural) rehabilitation, tinnitus management, and/or basic vestibular evaluations;
(10) Conducts hearing conservation or monitoring hearing evaluations;
(11) Incumbent provides services using telehealth modalities which may include diagnostic measures and treatment (including remote applications and VVC)
(12) Determines candidacy for bone-anchored hearing aids and osseo-integrated amplification devices, including pre and post-surgical assessment and device programming
(13) Stays informed on current and emerging cochlear implant and BAHA technology and programming techniques;
(14) Facilitates new software updates and installations;
(15) Continues to grow and improve the clinics remote programming relationships and agreements;

Special Clinical Program Responsibilities: Cochlear Implant Audiologist:
(1) Assesses moderately to profoundly hearing-impaired patients for candidacy for cochlear implants;
(2) Provides evaluation, management, programming, and rehabilitation services to cochlear implant patients;
(3) Provides comprehensive cochlear implant candidacy exams assessing the patent's current auditory rehabilitation status;
(4) Plans and coordinates appropriate implantation treatment and management programs;
(5) Performs administration functions relating to the cochlear implant program for the purposes of quality management, customer service and workload tracking;
(6) Reviews inter-facility consults for cochlear implantation and coordinates care with the patient's parent facility, often including remote cochlear implant programming;
(7) Applies current technology with regards to cochlear implants, FM systems, and assistive listening devices to maximize rehabilitation of each patient;(8) Utilizes aural rehabilitation methods with recipients to enhance their listening progress post surgery
(9) Provides counseling for patients and their families regarding profound hearing loss, cochlear implantation, and the impact on their lives;

Education
(1) Remains current with new developments in cochlear implant technology and programming and maintains professional competency by reading professional journals, engaging in continuing education and professional learning experiences, and by collaborating with other professionals;
(2) Supervises 3rd and 4th year AuD students and provides feedback on progress toward their established educational goals, specifically in relationship to the students development of identifying potential cochlear implant recipients, selecting and programming the devices, dispensing assistive technology, performing aural rehabilitation and monitoring post-surgical progress and understanding ability;
(3) Provides education to colleagues, other medical professionals, and academic affiliates via interdisciplinary meetings, in-service trainings, and presentations;
(4) Conducts research and/or quality improvement projects in the clinic and presents findings at local and national professional conferences.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: possess a Doctor of Audiology (AuD) from an audiology program recognized by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The CAA is the only accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit entry-level audiology programs. HR office staff and management officials may verify the program accredited from CAA at www.caa.asha.org.OR Other doctoral degree in hearing science or a directly related field from an institution accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the USDE.NOTE: Effective January 1, 2007, the CAA in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of ASHA accredits only doctoral degree or AuD programs in audiology.
  • Licensure: hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to independently practice audiology at the doctoral level in a United States state, territory, commonwealth or the District of Columbia. NOTE: All audiologists who perform compensation and pension examinations perform direct patient care duties and must possess a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology and must meet the experience requirements under Section 2. D. See 38 C.F.R. § 4.85.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
All individuals employed in VHA in this occupational series or in another occupational series performing the duties described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held, including positive education and licensure. For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements of this standard but previously met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it, the following provisions apply:
(1) Audiologists may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance (journeyman) level or changed to a lower grade within the occupation, but may not be promoted beyond the journeyman level or placed in supervisory or managerial positions.
(2) Audiologists who are converted to title 38 hybrid status under this provision and subsequently leave the occupation lose protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of re-entry to the occupation.
(3) Audiologists who are appointed temporarily prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed, on a temporary or permanent basis, until they meet the basic requirements of the standard.
(4) Audiologists initially grandfathered into this occupation, who subsequently obtain additional education and/or licensure/certification/registration that meet all the basic requirements of this qualification standard, must maintain the required credentials as a condition of employment in the occupation.

Grade Determinations: GS 13
Experience. At least two years of experience as a professional audiologist, with at least one year comparable to the next lower grade level.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the KSAs required at the full performance level, the following KSAs are required:
(a) Advanced knowledge in a focused area of contemporary audiology practice to provide oversight of a specialty program.
(b) Skill to evaluate the specialty program to ensure deadlines and goals are met.
(c) Skill to coordinate initiatives and build consensus among interdisciplinary team members.
(d) Ability to monitor and report on work progress in the specialty program to adjust workload and processes.
(e) Ability to serve as the SME and provide education relating to the specialty program.

Assignment. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity and range of variety and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Audiologists (clinical specialists) provide leadership and direct oversight in the design, development, implementation, planning and management of the specialty program. They serve as coaches or facilitators for the interdisciplinary team and are responsible for training all support staff and trainees as it relates to the specialty program. These individuals serve as the SME in matters regarding the specialty program.

Preferred Experience:
  • At least 2 years experience conducting audiological evaluations.
  • At least 2 years experience selecting, fitting and dispensing hearing aids
  • General experience with the adult or geriatric population preferred
