Duties

Help
  • Research training source material such as government regulations, manuals and/or technical orders to ensure accuracy of established course documents.
  • Evaluate student progress in courses covering a full range of subjects.
  • Participate in task analyses to determine training requirements of training and testing materials.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of courses of instruction covering advanced technical systems comparable to the upper-division undergraduate level.
  • Present material in accordance with lesson plans and within prescribed course framework.

  • TRAVEL ON AIRCRAFT AND VESSELS: The employee must be willing and able to travel on military and commercial aircraft or vessels.
  • HIGH STRESS TEACHING ENVIRONMENT: Must be able to instruct and monitor student activities in high physical stress environments, including shipboard damage control and firefighting trainers.
  • RATING REQUIRED: United States Coast Guard (USCG) Qualified Rating endorsement as Master of Steam or Motor Vessels of Not More Than 200 Gross Registered Tons (Oceans) must be obtained within 12 months of employment.
  • RATING REQUIRED: Apprentice Mate (Steersman) of Towing Vessels (Oceans) must be obtained within 12 months of employment.
  • RATING REQUIRED: Able Seaman endorsement and a Lifeboatman-Limited endorsement to meet all of the USCG endorsements must be obtained within 12 months of employment.
  • RATING REQUIRED: Survival Craft and Rescue Boats Other Than Lifeboats and Fast Rescue Boats (PSC-Limited) must be obtained within 12 months of employment.
  • BASIC SAFETY TRAINING: Basic Safety Training must be obtained within 12 months of employment.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) using training aids such as training models, devices and/or simulation to enhance training outcomes; 2) develop nautical science and maritime operations lesson plan for upper division undergraduate courses; AND/OR 3) teaching or instructing in an adult education program, secondary school, college, military installation, or industrial establishment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

OR

Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in education or a subject area related to the position to be filled, such as Education Adult Learners, Educational Leadership and any relating to this field.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).
