Summary

West Farms (West Haven) recorded its first household in 1648. Part of the original New Haven Colony. West Farms became the separate parish of West Haven in 1719 when the Connecticut General Assembly granted a petition submitted in 1712.
West Haven and North Milford joined in 1822 to form the Town of Orange. The rural and residential sections of Orange separated in 1921 when the residential part. West Haven became Connecticut's youngest Town. In 1961 West Haven was incorporated as a city.

West Haven prides itself on being home to the longest stretch of publicly accessible shoreline in Connecticut. The city's nearly 4-mile tract of beach on Long Island Sound comprises 25% of the state's public beaches, a valuable asset that is ripe for discovery.

  • The VA Connecticut Healthcare System was officially formed in 1995, when the VA medical centers in West Haven and Newington became affiliated.

  • Our West Haven VA Medical Center has a total of 216 operational beds. Our Newington campus has a total of 191 operational beds.

  • Our SPECT program provides state-of-the-art medical imaging for both Veteran care and research in biology, psychiatry, cardiology, and oncology.

  • Our New London clinic was named after John J. McGuirk, who served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. His efforts to assist other veterans from southeastern Connecticut led to the VA naming a clinic in his honor. It has since become the busiest clinic in the VA Connecticut Healthcare System.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Direct patient care focused on the immediate decision making and action necessary to prevent death or any further disability both in the ED and the out-of-hospital setting by interacting with emergency medical technicians and in the emergency department.
  • Asses, evaluate, diagnose, and provide initial treatment to patients who present in the Emergency Department with any symptom, illness, injury, or condition; to provide services necessary to ameliorate minor illnesses or injuries and stabilize patients with major illnesses or injuries; and to assess all patients to determine whether additional care is necessary.
  • Perform procedures related to Emergency Department such as but not limited to: basic and advanced airway management, rapid sequence intubation, management of mechanical ventilation, administration of moderate sedation, EKG interpretation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, cardioversion, defibrillation, venous central line placement, intraosseous access, peripheral arterial puncture for ABGs, NGT placement, gastric lavage, gastrostomy and tracheostomy tube replacement, reduction and immobilization of fractures and dislocations, wound care and closure (suture), abscess incision/drainage, lumbar puncture, knee arthrocentesis, anterior nasal packing, peripheral vein catheterization, vaginal pelvic exam and Foley Bladder Catheterization. Also, emergency surgical procedures indicated by emergency medical conditions or injuries such as emergent cricothyrotomy, and chest tube placement.
  • Participation in the coordination of interfacility transfers for patients requesting transfer from another emergency department to the VACT emergency department.
  • Participation in the coordination and recommendation for appropriate destination of patients in the out-of-hospital environment requesting access to the VACT emergency department.
  • Additional duties as assigned
Work Schedule: Rotating 10-hour Shifts: 8:00AM-6:00PM; 10:00AM-8:00PM; 12:00PM - 10:00PM; or 8:00PM - 6:00AM - and other shifts as needed to improve patient flow and patient care.

Qualifications


To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
    [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
    (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
    Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience:
  • Residency Training in Emergency Medicine; or Fellowship Training in Emergency Medicine; or Board Certification in Emergency Medicine
  • Emergency Medicine experience (within the last 12 months) and a minimum of 500 hours total EM experience after graduation from the family medicine/ internal medicine residency
  • Board Certified [by either the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) or the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine (AOBEM)] EM Physicians, 2) physicians eligible for regaining ABEM certification, 3) board eligible (BE) EM physicians as defined by ABEM's Jan 2015 definition (within five years of graduating from an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited Emergency Medicine (EM) residency), or 4) Board Certified (BC) family medicine (ABFM or AOBFP)/internal medicine(ABIM or AOBIM)

Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
  1. Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
  2. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
  3. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.]
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
