The incumbent in this position works as an Electrician in the Facilities Management Service (FMS) at the VA West Haven Campus. The incumbent works as a journeyman level employee performing maintenance and repair of architectural, mechanical and electrical components of buildings requiring the use of a variety of trades and practices associated with the following occupations: HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical Plastering, Carpentry and Painting. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Planning layouts, installs, as well as modifying and repairing a variety of complete systems as well as any parts of these systems.
  • Work with various gauges, sizes and types of wire, conduit, couplings, fittings, relays, boxes, circuit breakers and other electrical devices.
  • Use of tools and equipment such as Threading machine, soldering copper pipe, Hand Electric Augers and all associated hand tools.
  • Making repairs such as tightening, connections and wrapping exposed wiring with insulated tape.
  • Test circuits to see if they are complete after making repairs or installations.
  • Electrical troubleshooting and the skill required to remove and replace fixtures and controls and to make repairs such as tightening connections and wrapping exposed wiring.
  • Rearranging old or new outlets, relays, switches, and light fixtures and to test circuits.
  • Recognizing parts, such as resistors capacitors, and transistors.
  • Plumbing methods and techniques, for example must know how to measure, cut, bend pipes, and tiles.
  • Caulking and sealing such things as elbows, union joints, tiles pipe, faucets, and shower drains.
  • Skilled in refrigeration cycle of a variety of systems to make visual, audible, and mechanical checks.
  • Applying plastering trade practices and be able to apply commonly accepted work methods and techniques.
  • Applying carpentry trade practices, which includes how to add, subtract, multiply, divide and work with simple fractions to plan and measure material according to requirements and dimensions outlined in instructions.
  • Applying surface preparation and coating methods and techniques for painting.
Work Schedule: Selected Applicants may be assigned to one of the following work schedules Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm or 4 Days with 10 hour shifts. This will be discussed during the interview.

Physical Requirements: The duties require considerable movement around the hospital and involve bending, lifting, working from ladders and scaffolding and platforms, both in the outside buildings, and crawling through restrictive areas. The incumbent must occasionally lift
equipment or materials weighing fifty pounds or more with proper equipment. Assignments may require him/her to stand, stoop, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positrons.
