Summary

The Maintenance Mechanic is assigned to the Maintenance Unit within Engineering Service and performs a variety of tasks involved in coordinating facility space moves as well as upkeep and repair of buildings, grounds and related structures, fixtures and utilities. The primary duties are to plan, layout, build, fabricate, install, maintain, repair and replace building interior and exterior structural, architectural and finish features.

This is a term position not to exceed September 30, 2024.

Duties

The Lexington Veterans Affairs Medical Center is a fully accredited, two-division, tertiary care medical center with an operating bed complement of 199 hospital beds. Acute medical, neurological, surgical and psychiatric inpatient services are provided Cooper Division - Clinical Addition Entrance at the Cooper Division, located adjacent to the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Other available services include: emergency care, medical-surgical units, acute psychiatry, ICU, progressive care unit, (includes Cardiac Cath Lab) ambulatory surgery, OR/PACU, hemodialysis, medicine specialty clinics, surgery specialty clinics, and outpatient primary and specialty care.

This is a term position not to exceed September 30, 2024.

As the Maintenance Mechanic, the incumbent's duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform routine carpenter duties to include assembly and installation of various items.
  • Install and repair all types of floor coverings such as, asphalt and vinyl tile, wood floors, and carpeting install and repair all types of roofing and guttering and install various types of ceiling tile and track including fiberglass soundproof ceiling tile.
  • Assemble and install shelving, both wood and metal, repair furniture and keep in repair all fixed and moveable cabinets.
  • Assemble items with a variety of joining techniques.
  • Use wood, metal and various composite materials when installing or replacing interior partitions, flooring panels, flooring panels, suspending ceilings and counter tops and moldings.
  • Operate and use a wide variety of machines and tools. Operate and use carpentry tools by setting-up, adjusting, maintaining tools to meet required specifications.
  • Plan, measure and lay out carpentry materials by interpreting complex or incomplete instructions, sketches, blueprints, building codes and using shop mathematics.
  • Responsible for complete repair, replacement, adjustment and preventative maintenance of all painted surfaces to ensure proper conditions.
  • Incumbent to install and build modular furniture, to include wall mounted and f furniture.
  • Use standard tools and equipment such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, trowels, screeds, straight edges.
  • Prepare surfaces and apply coating techniques that will ensure surfaces have a smooth-textured and decorative appearance and meet thickness and level requirements.
  • Prepare surface for plaster application. Repair and patch existing surfaces.
  • Design lay out. and decorate signs and execute freehand and mechanical lettering.
  • Make stencils, templates, or paper patterns as necessary, to reproduce designs or shapes.
Incumbent must possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license at all times.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent is required to work on platforms, ladders, aerial lifts, roofs and gutters and is required to climb onto these structures carrying and lifting materials, tools and equipment. Work involves standing bending, sitting, squatting, and kneeling for long periods of time in a cramped position. May be required to crawl into tight places or climb to heights as much as I 00 feet from the ground and then perform duties at this height. Physical effort requires hand sawing, nailing and lifting large articles or assemblies. Work is carried on both inside and outside in fair weather and foul, in ventilated and unventilated areas, and subject to cuts and bruises during the erection of the wooden framework of buildings and structures; also danger of falling down from platforms, ladders, and roofs. While removing awnings and screens is subject to wasp and hornet stings while working on ladders and other platforms. The most prevalent source of accidents in their work is in the use of power saws and planers that can easily cause hand and eye injuries.
