Summary

The Health Technician serves as a member of the General Medical Inpatient team assisting with patient care activities under the direction of the Nurse Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager, or Chief of ER.

The position is responsible for expediting the care and treatment of patients and ensuring implementation of all requested diagnostic exams and performing routine and complex patient care duties.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES

Patient Care: The duties and responsibilities of the incumbent are varied and involve accomplishing both clinical and administrative tasks associated with the treatment and care of patients; serves as a member of the staff and participates in the assessment of physical, functional, psychosocial, spiritual and discharge planning needs of patients assigned in collaboration with the provider, social workers, nurses and/or other health care providers.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Assist physicians and/or Registered Nurses with procedures such as obtaining supplies necessary for physician to perform procedure, stocking the supply cart appropriately, and obtaining miscellaneous supplies from unit stock room or SPD. Clean equipment after procedure using proper infection control techniques.
  • Assist the registered nurse with IV insertion and removals.
  • Assist with tracheostomy suctioning and care.
  • Assist the registered nurse with ostomy care.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities that may require monitoring and collecting data.
  • Responds appropriately and sensitively to death and dying patients, their families and loved ones. Knowledge of paperwork and legal aspects of care of the dead including respectful postmortem care of the deceased and transfer to the morgue.
  • Assists health care professional to position patient and answer patient's questions during complex procedures. Responds to emergency situations such as cardiopulmonary failure, hemorrhaging, and shock by assisting in the performance of resuscitation measures.
  • Assist with set up of bedside medical procedures, for example: Paracentesis, thoracentesis, and lumbar punctures. Assist with moving or repositions patients during procedure. Deliver all specimens collected to lab correctly labeled and in a timely manner.

Administrative Duties: Other miscellaneous administrative and clerical duties as directed by Nurse Manager or designee, such as answering phones at the front desk, answering call lights, obtaining supplies, printing patient rosters each shift and checking for accuracy of providers and treating specialties. Perform miscellaneous functions as directed by the provider. Perform many other duties of transport, clerical and administrative nature. Performs a variety of auxiliary duties connected with patient care such as checking operational status of equipment. Participates in a unit committee for performance improvement activities. Maintain a cooperative attitude with patients, families, and all disciplines.

Work Schedule: TOD: 7:30am - 4:00pm, 11:30am - 8:00pm & 12:00am - 8:00am with rotational shifts, weekends & Holidays; subject to change based on the needs of the facility.

It may involve walking, frequent bending, reaching and stretching to set up and take apart equipment; lifting and positioning patients; and carrying, pushing, or pulling moderately heavy objects. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: completing 12-lead EKG; drawing blood on specified labs, including blood culture (phlebotomy); placing Foley catheters, etc.

OR

Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-06 level. You must have successfully completed one half year of graduate education (9 semester hours or equivalent) with a major that included courses directly related to the work of this position. Such graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.

OR

Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-06 level. You must have an equivalent combination of successfully completed graduate-level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total qualification requirements for this grade level. This education must have been obtained at an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university. NOTE: Your experience must be documented in your resume and transcripts are required.

To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-06. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
