Help

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is located within Long Term Care (Pine Lodge) at the VA WNY Medical Center in Batavia, NY. The incumbent functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team and assists the Registered Nurse in providing holistic care to patients in a long term care setting. In the entry level (GS-3) position the following duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Establishing positive patient/family/staff relationships by utilizing appropriate communication skills.
  2. Assisting in the collection and documentation of routine objective and subjective data relative to uncomplicated patient situations.
  3. Participating in patient centered conferences and shift reports.
  4. Assisting and maintaining a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment, Adhering to all safety and health standards, regulations, and work practices.
  5. Providing competent patient care in a manner which ensures safety to patients, staff, visitors, and self, and seeking direction as needed.
  6. Obtaining appropriate supplies and equipment for patient care delivery.
  7. Assisting with simple diagnostic measures, including collection of urine and stool specimens, and collecting and/or testing any other specimens as instructed.
  8. Performing and/or assisting in all aspects of nursing care to meet patient uncomplicated needs for:
  • Psychosocial/Spiritual well being
  • Personal Hygiene
  • Physical comfort and privacy
  • Activity, exercise, rest
  • Nutrition
  • Elimination
  • Prevention of skin break down
  1. Assisting with appropriate actions in emergency situations; initiating CPR when indicated. Maintains BLS certification.
  2. Performing routine treatments relevant to area of assignment.
  3. Administering selected medications to a number of patients and seeking clarification of orders as necessary. Identifying the need for PRN medications, recognizing and reporting effects of medication. Documenting the administration of all medications in the medical record following established policies. Documenting the response to PRN medications in the medical record.
  4. Recording basic information in the medical record and reporting patient status to RN. Documenting patient/family/significant other teaching and their response to the teaching.
  5. Assisting in orienting patients/family, staff to unit routines.
  6. Displaying respect for human dignity and the uniqueness of the patient unrestricted by consideration of social or economic status, personal attributes, or nature of health problems.
  7. Safeguarding the patient's right to privacy by judiciously protecting information of a confident nature.
  8. Working as a cooperative and courteous member of the nursing team.
  9. Assisting with the implementation of the quality improvement program at the unit level.
  10. Following established safety practices and reporting to the supervisor, as promptly as possible, unsafe conditions, unsafe practices, or an occupational illness or injury which was sustained.
  11. Completes all mandatory requirements and appropriate competencies before the due date for the area in which they are assigned.
  12. Maintains professional boundaries with patients, families, and other staff at all times.
  13. Applying relevant growth and development processes when treating and caring for age-specific veterans.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Candidate must be a graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing (NLNAC) at the time you completed the program. Exceptions include: (1) Health care education in the military service or training in the military service that is accepted by the licensing body in the jurisdiction in which licensed as qualifying for full LPN/LVN licensure meets the education requirements. (2) Individuals granted a license by a jurisdiction that does not require graduation from an approved school.
  • Candidate must have a full, active, current and unrestricted license as a practical or vocational nurse in s State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or District of Columbia.
  • LPN/LVN nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in both spoken and written English.

Grade Determinations:
GS-3: None beyond the basic requirements.
GS-4: Meeting the basic requirements and 6 months of qualifying experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
GS-5: Meeting the basic requirements and Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent (candidate demonstrates knowledge and ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems.
GS-6: Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent (candidate has demonstrated knowledge and ability to appropriately carry out assigned patient care based on the patient's conditions; utilizes judgment in selecting the appropriate order and sequence of procedures and treatments).

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-3 to GS-6.

Physical Requirements: The LPN position requires that the employee be able to lift and carry moderate weight (up to 44 lbs.), stand for long periods of time, walk, bend, pull/push, reach above shoulders and use both hands and fingers. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and random drug screen is a condition of employment.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
