Summary

This is a Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) position located within the Central Alabama VA Health Care System in Montgomery, AL. The Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) will be supporting the decontamination, preparation, and distribution of the reusable (RME) medical equipment inventory management used in the Medical Center and CBOC's.
This is not a supply ordering position; it is a medical sterilization position.

Help

The duties of the Medical Supply Technician include but are not limited to:

  • Applies the processes for Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) as required by this position;
  • Maintains current knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which documents the processes and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and preparation of RME appropriate to this position;
  • Provides sterilization, preparation, supply items and reusable medical equipment decontamination and distribution support for the medical center;
  • Disassembles the RME and determines the correct cleaning method, such as but not limited to, ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washers, cart washers and chemical cleaning/decontamination agents as determined by manufactures instructions;
  • Inspects, prepares, assembles and determines the correct method and packaging for sterilization to include, but not limited to, steam, Sterrad, Steris, EtO and high-level disinfecting reprocessor;
  • Prepares operating room case carts daily utilizing surgery schedule;
  • Removes soil, blood, tissue fragments, body fluids and other contaminants by wiping, soaking, rinsing and scrubbing;
  • Inspects packages for indications of proper sterilization, assembles basic sets and trays used throughout the medical center including those used in the operating room;
  • Performs segments of work pertaining to the decontamination, sterilization and inspection of reusable medical equipment (RME);
  • Completes segments of work pertaining to the assembly of basic sets and trays for use in the medical center;
  • Operates equipment involved in sterilization processes. May be required to prepare operating room case carts;
  • Performs and documents daily operational checks and records for all sterilization equipment.
Work Schedule:
Montgomery, AL Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM/10:00 AM - 6:30 PM, Subject to change based on agency needs.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Experience and/or Education:
(1) Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or
(2) Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or
(3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

3. English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
RADE DETERMINATION: In addition to meeting the above Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Grade Determination criteria below:
Medical Supply Technician, GS-05 (Developmental Level)
(a) Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level; OR
(b) Education. Four academic years above high school leading to a Bachelor's degree with at least 12 semester hours in courses related to the occupation or a Bachelor's degree.
(c) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience or education above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Basic knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings.
2. Basic knowledge of event-related packaging in regards to sterility.
3. Knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment.
Medical Supply Technician, GS-06 (Full Performance Level)
(a) Experience.
One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
(b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings.
2. Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination.
3. Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures.
4. Knowledge of sterility principles in regards to instrumentation.
5. Ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures.

Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) Qualification Standard dated July 8, 2015.The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-05 to GS-06.

Physical Requirements: Must be compliant with the following physical standards and environmental factors: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds & over; Heavy carrying, 45 pounds & over; Straight pulling and Pushing (8 hours); Walking (8 hours); Standing (8 hours); Kneeling and repeated bending (8 hours); Use of fingers; Both eyes, hands and legs required; Walk on uneven or slippery surfaces. Works around machinery and moving objects. Works alone and closely with others. Excessive fumes and constant noise.
