Help

Duties include:

  • Responsible for moving equipment and furniture; assisting Engineering craftsmen with laborer-related duties incidental to their occupations; providing grounds care including mowing, pruning trees and shrubs, maintaining flower beds, seeding, mulching, general landscaping, and leaf raking; and extensive roads and grounds area general maintenance. Employee performs motor vehicle operation on a regular and recurring basis as an ancillary duty in support of laborer duties.
  • Responsible for digging ditches and trenches with pick and shovel, does grading and sloping, occasionally breaks up pavement and concrete flooring with jackhammer and paving breaker, mixes and pours concrete, fills and levels holes in damaged roads using asphalt cold mix.
  • Performing duties in the safest manner to avoid creation of hazardous situations, which could result in personal injury or damage to property.
  • Using 24hp and up diesel-powered mowers, walking and riding types. Cleans and checks equipment before and after use, operate various types of equipment such as tractors equipped with mowers, front end loaders, snowplows and blades (both front and rear), snow blowers and brooms. Incumbent must exercise judgment to accomplish work by using the equipment in a safe and efficient operating technique when using specialized equipment around potholes, curbs, rocks, and other visible objects on the facility grounds.
  • Daily activities may include driving cars and vans to transport supplies; and driving pickup trucks and dump trucks to pick up and dispose of trash, leaves, and other debris. Occasionally, drives a truck equipped with a hydraulic lift gate to pick up and deliver furniture.
  • On a weekly basis, performs pickup of all shredding containers; operates the commercial shredder in order to destroy sensitive data throughout the facility.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who have acceptable qualifications as shown by detailed experience listed in their resume will be considered for further rating; those who do not will be found not qualified.

You will be rated on the following Job Elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

  1. Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal Supervision (Screen-out Element)
  2. Skill and knowledge to operate and control large, complex riding mowers and similar types of specialized equipment wherein constant attention to working space and environment is critical.
  3. Skill in the operation of various controls and levers to maneuver equipment, and lift/lower, adjust, engage/disengage components or attached devices.
  4. Knowledge of project requirements relative to such activities as preparing ground, laying sod, or planting flowers or shrubs.
  5. Knowledge of defensive driving techniques, and knowledge of State and local safe driving rules and regulations.
  6. Knowledge to recognize developing maintenance problems when conducting operator's inspections, and to report technical problems to the supervisor.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements. This position exerts heavy physical laboring in performing tasks such as lifting and moving heavy objects, running power equipment, pushing wheelbarrows and spreaders, shoveling objects weighing up to 50 pounds lifted on a regular basis, and up to 75 pounds may be lifted occasionally. Also performs weed-eating and other laborer duties that require climbing of ladders and considerable walking.

Working Conditions. Work is performed outside in extreme heat, cold and rainy weather. Work is also performed in dirty, dusty, and wet locations. Laborers must observe all safety regulations to protect themselves and others. Personal protective equipment is used as safety measures for specific jobs and equipment.
