Duties may include but are not limited to:
The incumbent provides patient care/support services to an adult population of patients that are characterized by a very significant number of older male patients. Within these broad categories, the employee must tailor patient care/support service to meet the needs of individual patients. This includes the responsibility for assessment of each patient's needs, and delivery of services that are responsive to the concerns of individual patient to the extent possible.
Draws blood and processes specimens for transport. Uses special drawing techniques such as butterfly needles, vacutainers, and syringes. Assures appropriate tubes are used and the correct amount of blood is drawn.
Review's patient lab orders in CPRS; decides which orders should be used; merges duplicate orders and notifies providers when orders are not accessible or have not yet been received into the system.
Adheres to patient safety, infection control and universal precautions as described in current hospital policies at all times.
Instructs patients in proper sterile midstream collection, 24-hour urine collections and collection of urine specimens for culture and sensitivity. Explains the collection of fecal specimens for fat and occult blood.
Stocks, inventories, and request supplies supporting lab functions.
Responds to, reports and assists in emergency situations. Utilizes standard CPR and first aid procedures for the care of patients who become ill, faint or arrest while having blood drawn.
Accepts and enters requests into the FHCC Computer system, using a multitude of computer codes to identify individual types of laboratory tests.
Perform toenail clippings per provider orders.
Performs Automated External Defibrillator (AED) checks as per facility protocols.
Performs and records EKG's as per provider order. Reviews EKG with Provider prior to completion of the patient EKG appointment. Electronically transmits provider reviewed/approved EKGs to Cardiology for verification.
Cleans equipment per Reusable Medical Equipment.
Measures Vital Signs using automatic and manual equipment, and records readings in patient's Electronic Health Record.
Completes CPRS clinical reminders within scope of practice.
Provide one on one observation to patients identified as being suicidal /homicidal until relieved of duty
Completes and maintains FHCC Immunization Certification, and administers Vaccinations per protocol, to veterans who have been screened as eligible by licensed staff; nursing or provider.
Cleaning stocking, inventories, and requests, supplies as needed for use in drawing blood, accessioning, and processing areas.
Maintains Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
Utilize telephone visits and secure messaging to contact patients regarding patient care information not related to clinic assessment.
Managing inbound/outbound fax communications, communicating with FHCC Specialty Clinics and community provider offices.
Participate in performance improvement data collection,
Coordinates with community providers to ensure efficient continuity of care.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-4 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: basic knowledge of circulatory anatomy and physiology, location of veins and arteries and their functioning characteristics. Comprehensive knowledge of wide variety of routine and special specimen testing requirements. Specimen handling, knowledge of Microsoft programs, labor testing methods, medical terminology, policies and procedures related to patient care and safety, aseptic principles, infection control, communication skills, security information systems, security and confidentiality. OR Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. OR Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond high-school. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Preferred experience: Computer Skills, Customer Service, Patient Care, Specimen Collection, blood draws, specimen collection and EKG's.
