Summary

The Northern Arizona VA Health Care System (NAVAHCS) is recruiting for a Maintenance Worker to be part of the Facilities Management Service, within the Architecture & Plumbing (A&P) Section, which is part of the Maintenance & Operations (M&O) located in Prescott, AZ. The primary purpose of the Maintenance Worker is to perform a variety of maintenance, repair, minor renovations, and construction procedures related to Carpentry, Painting, and Plumbing.

The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Designs, layouts, and constructs walls using wood or metal studs, cutting and installing drywall to include taping and mudding, repairs or replaces flooring, installs doors and door hardware.
  • Replaces and maintains plumbing fixtures, including utility, supply and disposal systems, fixtures, fittings and equipment such as sewage, water, gas and oil lines, compressed air, vacuum and acid systems, water closets, water heaters, hydrants, valves, and pumps and other related components.
  • Constructs, alters, maintains, and repairs buildings, structures, partitions, ceilings, office furniture, panels, tool cabinets, bookcases, work benches, and other items using wood substitutes, and composite building materials.
  • Assembles items with a variety of joining techniques such as miters, rabbets, dadoes, biscuit, and mortise and tenon, and use glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces, veneers, and counter tops.
  • Primes surfaces using brushes, rollers, or spray equipment to an acceptable thickness to ensure proper bonding of topcoat and protection of material being prepared.
  • Works from basic blueprints or sketches, verbal instructions, or written work orders.
  • Measures, cuts, constructs, installs, repairs, and modifies wood, composite, steel framing, and wood substitute materials by performing work to close tolerances, exact fit, and structural soundness.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm
Compressed/Flexible Work Schedule: May be authorized after completing at least 90 days of continuous service.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent may be required to stand, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, crawl, and work in awkward positions for prolonged periods. The incumbent handles and carries equipment, materials and tools weighing up to forty (4) pounds. Occasionally lifts and carries objects over ninety (90) pounds, with the assistance of others or lifting devices. The work can sometimes require strenuous physical exertion.
Working Conditions: Incumbent works indoors and outdoors. Work involves frequent walking, standing, and occasional desk work. The position requires stooping, bending, or working in cramped awkward positions. Incumbent must be able to work in noisy, dirty, dusty, greasy, and sometimes humid environment. Is subject to hazardous conditions which may include the risk of scrapes, cuts, bruises, burns, contusions, infections, broken bones, and respiratory ailments; hence, must be aware of this and be able to cope with the same. Safety procedures must be followed, and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn, as required for the specific work area or task. Work may be performed from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
