Memphis is the Home of the Blues and the Birthplace of Rock 'n' Roll. It is a pilgrimage for those wanting to visit the birthplace of the blues, of soul and of rock 'n' roll. On Beale Street, W.C. Handy put down on paper the first written blues music. Elvis, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash all recorded at the historic Sun Records, which is now a museum. Graceland, the second most-visited home in America, welcomes visitors from around the world who yearn for a peek into the life of "the King." Beyond the music, Tennessee's largest city also offers much more. It has more sunny days each year than Miami, and combines southern tradition and hospitality with modern amenities. You'll enjoy great dining (be sure to sample the barbecued ribs), art galleries and exciting nightlife.

The VAMC in Memphis, TN consists of one main campus located at 1030 Jefferson Avenue, which includes a 60-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and nine community based outpatient clinics (CBOC). It is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility and one of the most complex medical centers in the VA system. Specialized outpatient services are provided through general, specialty, and subspecialty outpatient clinics including a women's health center. Services are available to more than 206,000 Veterans living in a 53-county tri-state area (Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi).


As the Food Service Worker, the incumbent's duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in serving food cafeteria-style in the patient dining room, to both in- and out-patients.
  • Assist in loading convection oven(s) with bulk pans of chilled food and operate oven for mealtimes.
  • Make and bag toast for the next day. Assist in making cold sandwiches.
  • Pack sack meals as required.
  • Assist with pre-portioning foods such as applesauce, pudding, canned fruits, crackers and cheese, individual peanut butter, cottage cheese, sliced cheese, etc.
  • Prepare labels and date bulk drink mix.
  • Operate various pieces of food service equipment such as toaster, delivery carts, docking stations, coffee, tea and juice dispensers, etc.
  • Deliver food trays to assigned inpatient units according to established schedule and position assignment.
  • Retrieve soils food trays and return trays to dish room.
  • Deliver both bulk and individual nourishments to inpatient units and place in nourishment refrigerator.
  • Assist with assembly and delivery of early/late trays.
  • Sweep and mop kitchen and dining room floors. Run scrubbing machines. Clean assigned work areas, wash walls and other kitchen equipment.
  • Scrape, stack, pre-wash, load and receive dishes and store clean dishes, trays, silverware, domes, bowls, cups in the appropriate storage racks.
  • Take out trash and sanitize trash containers.

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to lift and/or move heavy objects weighing up to 45 pounds. Work requires continuous standing, walking and bending as well as frequent stooping, reaching, pushing and pulling.


Working Conditions: Must be alert to safety rule as employee is subject to cuts, burns and strains from working with hands and/or operating powered equipment. Exposed to falls due to wet, slippery floors and exposed to above normal noise levels. Exposed to the usual hazards and disagreeable conditions which exist in a kitchen such as exposure to abnormal and fluctuating temperatures. Working areas are often uncomfortably warm, humid, cold and noisy.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
