This announcement is intended to fill current and future vacancies under various healthcare service lines at VA Medical Centers/Clinics within the VA New England Healthcare System. Shifts could be days, evenings, nights, or include weekends/holidays to cover shortages or high patient volume. Shift changes will be considered based on patient and facility needs.
Based on assignment and grade, duties may include but are not limited to:
Functioning as a member of the nursing care team and assist licensed nursing staff in the care of patients/residents receiving outpatient care, home or community living care or other patients/residents who are in acute, sub acute or chronic states of illness. Assignments may involve complex nursing needs which can vary within a range of predictable to unpredictable requirements. Demonstrates knowledge of basic health care provider skills. Follows standard precautions and other infection control protocols as needed. Provides 1:1 or Safety Sitter nursing care to Veterans/residents who may require restraints or special observation. Understanding Veteran's/resident's rights and responsibilities. Provides comprehensive physical care to Veterans/residents. Motivating Veterans/residents towards optimal level of functioning. Accurately records care delivery and observations using established oral, written and computer communications according to documentation guidelines.
Nursing Assistants will be expected to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patients/residents. Incumbent will observe patients/residents' or resident's physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner. Use of equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, etc. The Nursing Assistant will communicate effectively with patients/residents, their families and other health professionals. May serve as a preceptor to new nursing assistants by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting. Will recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance, for example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.
Work Schedule: Multiple tours available; to be discussed at interview and determined on selection. Days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and off-tours may be required.
