Summary

A Staff Physiatrist is a Physical Medicine ad Rehabilitation (PM&R) physician who has completed residency training in an accredited program and has completed Board Certification by the American Board of PM&RS. This position will specifically require an expert level of knowledge and skills in multiple facets of rehabilitation.

  • Provide expert level clinical care in PM&R specific evaluations, diagnoses and treatment including using telehealth modalities.
  • Utilize effective communication skills at all levels to enhance team functioning, patient care coordination, and leadership.
  • Provide clinical care for all general rehabilitation populations.
  • Provide consultation to professional staff within WNCVAMC and community providers concerning clinical assessment findings and appropriate patient treatment plans.
  • Develop, implement, and document the PM&R treatment plan for an assigned caseload of patients.
  • Functions independently as a member of the WNCVAMC Staff, with full clinical privileges.
  • Assumes complete professional responsibility for his/her clinical assessment findings, patient care decisions, and documentation. h. Provides education to patients, family members, and significant others.
  • Complies with all CPRS documentation procedures, including timeliness of standards for documentation, and proper patient check out procedures including return to clinic orders.
  • Maintains certification and licensure in the medical specialty.
  • Serves as a clinical leader in emergencies.
  • Provides care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for health problems, and promotes wellness and healing.
  • Demonstrates knowledge about established and evolving biomedical, clinical, and cognate sciences, and their application in patient care.
  • Demonstrate skills that result in effective information exchange and teaming with patients, their families and professional associates.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles and sensitivity to diverse patient populations.
  • Demonstrates awareness of and responsibility to larger context and systems of healthcare. Ability to call on system resources to provide optimal care.
  • Incumbent is responsible for review of the amputee clinic for cost containment, operational data management, data analysis, efficiency of clinic, clinical utilization, access, encounters, development of clinic policies, and updating clinic policies.
  • Completes consult management making sure to meet the scheduling directives for both EMG clinic and Amputee clinic.
  • Keeps clinics at 80% book ability.
  • Keeps productivity at or above the national target.
  • Monitor local performance in the national performance measures and develop processes to ensure completion of those measures Participates in local, VISN, & national forums .
  • Helps to complete FPPE and OPPE reviews for other Physiatrists at the WNCVAMC.
  • Helps to review and complete pay for performance forms.
  • Follow systems in place to monitor the effectiveness of the clinical program through quality improvement processes and ongoing program evaluation.
  • Assists in meeting measures and standards for accreditation with outside agencies such as The Joint Commission.
  • Complies with national and local performance measures, including timely health care screenings and completion of clinical reminders for all patients.
  • Liaisons with other health care programs, if necessary, to effectively coordinate service or patient care.
  • Attends and participates in administrative and informational meetings such as in-services when it surrounds EMGs or Amputees.
  • Adheres to operational policies and procedures for assigned program and WNCVAMC, while staying abreast of current VA, VISN and Medical policies and procedures.
  • Complies with PM&RS peer review procedures (OPPE/FPPE privileging).

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
    [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
    (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
    Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: All applicants must be physically able to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position. A pre-placement physical examination shall be completed prior to appointment.

Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
  1. Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
  2. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
  3. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.]
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.

Additional information

Pursuant to VHA Directive 1192.01, Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a condition of employment and a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Wearing a face mask is required when an exemption to the influenza vaccination has been granted. HCP in violation of this directive may face disciplinary action up to and including removal from federal service.

HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations or who come into contact with VA patients or other HCP as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased medical facilities. HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, remote and onsite, paid and without compensation, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work at these facilities. HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities.
