Help

The Orthopedic Physician Assistant (PA) in both the Inpatient Surgical Unit and Outpatient Clinical Care is a key member of the orthopedic surgical care team responsible for providing advanced clinical care to patients with musculoskeletal conditions. The PA operates under the supervision of the attending orthopedic surgeons and collaborates with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

  1. Clinical Assessment and Management (Inpatient and Outpatient):
    • Conduct comprehensive physical examinations and obtain detailed medical histories of patients.
    • Perform preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative evaluations.
    • Order, review, and interpret diagnostic tests such as X-rays, MRI, CT scans, and laboratory results.
    • Develop, implement, and evaluate treatment plans in collaboration with the supervising orthopedic surgeon.
    • Prescribe medications and other forms of treatment as appropriate.
  2. Surgical Assistance:
    • Assist in orthopedic surgeries, including joint replacements, fracture fixations, and other musculoskeletal procedures.
    • Perform technical surgical tasks such as suturing, wound closure, and application of immobilization devices under the direction of the surgeon.
    • Ensure sterile techniques and patient safety protocols are maintained during surgical procedures.
  3. Inpatient Care (Surgical Inpatient Unit):
    • Manage and monitor patients in the inpatient surgical unit, ensuring timely assessment and interventions in response to patient needs.
    • Perform bedside procedures such as joint aspirations, wound care, and casting/splinting.
    • Coordinate with nursing and ancillary staff to facilitate patient care and discharge planning.
    • Manage postoperative care, including pain management, rehabilitation protocols, and monitoring for complications.
  4. Inpatient Rounds:
    • Conduct daily inpatient rounds to assess patient progress, address new or ongoing concerns, and modify treatment plans as necessary.
    • Collaborate with the orthopedic surgical team, nursing staff, and other healthcare providers during rounds to ensure cohesive patient care.
    • Document patient progress, treatment modifications, and care plans promptly and accurately in the electronic health record system.
    • Communicate effectively with patients and their families to provide updates on patient status and answer any questions or concerns.
  5. Discharge Planning:
    • Develop comprehensive discharge plans in collaboration with the healthcare team, ensuring that patients are appropriately prepared for discharge.
    • Provide patients and caregivers with detailed instructions on postoperative care, medication management, wound care, physical therapy, and follow-up appointments.
    • Coordinate with outpatient services, home healthcare, and rehabilitation facilities as needed to ensure a seamless transition from inpatient to outpatient care.
    • Address and mitigate potential barriers to discharge, such as medication access, transportation, and home support.
  6. Outpatient Clinical Care:
    • Conduct outpatient clinics to diagnose, treat, and manage common orthopedic conditions, such as fractures, arthritis, sports injuries, and musculoskeletal disorders.
    • Perform minor procedures in the outpatient setting, such as joint injections, aspirations, and casting.
    • Educate patients on preoperative and postoperative care, including rehabilitation exercises, activity modifications, and lifestyle changes.
    • Follow up on post-surgical patients to monitor recovery progress and address any ongoing concerns.
    • Coordinate outpatient referrals and consultations with other medical specialties as needed.
    • Ensure continuity of care through comprehensive documentation and communication with primary care providers and other specialists.
  7. Education and Counseling:
    • Educate patients and their families about medical conditions, surgical procedures, postoperative care, and rehabilitation.
    • Provide guidance on lifestyle modifications, exercise regimens, and injury prevention strategies.
    • Participate in the education and training of medical students, residents, and other healthcare providers.
  8. Documentation and Compliance:
    • Maintain accurate and timely medical records in the electronic health record system.
    • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
    • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to clinical research projects as appropriate.
  9. Professional Development:
    • Engage in continuing medical education activities to stay updated with advancements in orthopedic care.
    • Attend departmental meetings, conferences, and workshops to enhance professional knowledge and skills.
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical protocols and guidelines.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8am - 4:30pm.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Physician Assistant Basic Requirements

  • Master's degree in any discipline or a bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant ~AND~
  • Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or is in the process of taking the exam) ~AND~
  • Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience:

Grade Determinations:
PA I - Experience and Education. None beyond the basic requirements. This is the entry level for PAs.

PA II - Experience and Education. The PA at this grade is at the intermediate grade level and has had progressively increasing responsibility and experiences as indicated in the KSAs listed below. Individuals will have demonstrated the ability to analyze and solve more complex medical problems than at the entry level grade and can utilize their training in the successful practice of patient care and participate in team problem solving. Individuals demonstrate the KSAs of PA-II intermediate level by:
i. Two years of successful practice as a PA. OR
ii. Successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program sponsored by VHA Office of Academic Affiliations or other postgraduate residency programs accredited by VA, ARC-PA, U.S. Armed Forces, or another accrediting agency. OR
iii. A doctoral degree in a health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

PA III - Experience and Education. PAs at the PA-III grade are at the full performance level and lead and organize patient care independently, practice within multi-disciplinary teams, and coordinate all aspects of patient care across the health care system. They utilize advanced clinical knowledge and judgment in decision-making and evaluating outcomes. They function as experts in clinical practice and/or in areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities, may serve as mentors for transitioning PAs, and may provide training for health care students. Individuals can demonstrate the KSAs for the full performance level by:
i. Three years of successful practice as a PA. OR
ii. Successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program sponsored by VHA Office of Academic Affiliations or other postgraduate residency programs accredited by VA, ARC-PA, U.S. Armed Forces, or another accrediting agency and one year of professional practice as a PA. OR
iii. A doctoral degree in a health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and one year of professional practice as a PA.

The full performance level of this vacancy is Grade 03. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of to Grade 01 to Grade 03.
