Duties

Help
  • You will develop permanent, temporary, and traveling exhibits for the National Museum of the US Navy.
  • You will assist the Naval History and Heritage Command website and social media programs.
  • You will research all resources at the Naval History and Heritage Command for historically and factually correct imagery and artifacts.
  • You will communicate with Naval History program wide museum staff, official DOD sources, and non-Navy about exhibits produced.

Qualifications

GS-11:

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional MUSEUM CURATOR. Specialized experience includes duties related to the following:

  1. Researching and creating museum exhibits;
  2. Demonstrating experience in the planning process for new museums, including interpretive programs, architecture and exhibit design;
  3. Presenting historic topics to diverse audiences

GS-09:

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional MUSEUM CURATOR. Specialized experience includes duties related to the following:
  1. Working with other museum staff members to suggest art and photographic imagery for exhibits;
  2. Assisting in the research and writing of publications/exhibits
  3. Advising, meeting, and corresponding with officials and other museums about historical imagery and the location of the imagery in the respective repositories.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess

A successfully completed bachelor's degree in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field.

OR

A combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field plus appropriate experience or additional education.

OR

Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a 4-year course of study in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field.

In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

GS-11:
3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field.

OR

Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above that are equivalent to a major in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field plus appropriate experience or additional education. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent.

GS-09:

2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field.

OR

master's or equivalent graduate degree in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above that are equivalent to a major in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field plus appropriate experience or additional education. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent.
