THIS IS A DIRECT HIRE ANNOUNCEMENT. Section 1109 of the National Defense Authorization Act Fiscal Year 2020 Public Law 116-92 amended Section 9905 of title 5, United States Code (U.S.C.) to streamline and simplify certain Department of Defense civilian Direct Hire Authorities to recruit and appoint qualified candidates directly to certain positions in the competitive service in the Department of Defense.

Duties

Help
  • You will devise a variety of control measures, including ventilation, shielding, material substitution, change in work procedures, isolation, education, personal protective devices.
  • You will evaluate proposed new work processes and/or materials and or recommend measures to minimize health hazards.
  • You will investigate health problems which arise among workers to determine probable cause and to recommend measures to minimize health hazards.
  • You will refer to Federal, DoD, and Navy regulations pertaining to occupational health and hazardous materials.

Qualifications

GS-11
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Experience completing industrial hygiene surveys.
  • Experience in concepts, principles, and practices, applicable to carrying out all industrial hygiene programs for Navy.
  • Experience developing a variety of control measures to include: ventilation, shielding, material substitution, changes in work procedures, isolation, education, and personal protective devices.
  • Experience investigating arising health concerns and determining probable cause within the workplace.
  • Experience recommending and evaluating new work processes to minimize health hazards.
GS-09
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
  • Experience completing industrial hygiene surveys.
  • Experience developing a variety of control measures to include: ventilation, shielding, material substitution, changes in work procedures, isolation, education, and personal protective devices.
  • Experience investigating arising health concerns and determining probable cause within the workplace.
  • Experience recommending and evaluating new work processes to minimize health hazards.

Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess.

  • A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
  • A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene;
  • Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH)
