Duties

Help
  • Performs difficult and complex ultrasound examinations and determines how best to perform the examination while identifying the medically significant aspects found and documenting that to the Radiologist.
  • Utilizes different methods and techniques, make modifications to effectively accomplish diagnostic ultrasound examinations.
  • Serves as the Clinical Instructor for students on rotation from local Institute of Ultrasound Diagnostics training programs.
  • Trains Radiologists, physicians and other personnel in ultrasound principles, procedures, capabilities, techniques and equipment when required.
  • Uses systems like the Picture Archiving and Communications System to manipulate, transfer, query and communicate the digital images of all patients and creates disks for patients as needed.
  • Operates the Teleradiology system in order to ensure the transmission of the examination and all required paperwork to the outside Radiologist.
  • Receives patients of all ages for examination, verifies patient identification and medication allergies Explains procedures, position patient and actions to allay fears and secure maximum cooperation.
  • Receives and reviews requests from physicians and other healthcare providers for ultrasound examinations of patients in the automated information system or other current electronic healthcare record systems.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Registration as a Registered Ultrasound Technologist (RDMS) and/or certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), and/or American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT-S).
  • This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
  • Position requires regular and reoccurring contact with children/minors under the age of 18, and a Child Background Check is required.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment/placement screening and random testing thereafter.
  • Required to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties
  • Pre-employment physical required and annually thereafter.
  • Required to obtain necessary immunizations (i.e., Hepatitis B, annual influenza)
  • May be required to work uncommon tours of duty hours, working either fixed or rotating shift which may include on call, evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • This position has been designated “Mission Essential”.
  • Position requires approximately 5% TDY/travel.
  • Required to wear Personnel Protective Equipment.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment/placement screening and random testing thereafter.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing a wide variety of ultrasound examinations on human patients;
setting up, adjusting, operating or maintaining ultrasound and diagnostic equipment; and assisting providers in reading or evaluating ultrasound results. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
