Duties include but not limited to:
- The incumbent will be directly involved clinically as a physician assistant coordinating all aspects of providing the right surgical care to the right patient most efficiently and effectively.
- Performs and dictates/types initial histories and physical examinations as well as progress notes on all procedures performed for which he or she is responsible and enters into the non-O.R. portion of the surgical DHCP package.
- Makes daily rounds, observes patients' medical progress, changing orders when appropriate, and notifying the attending physician of significant changes in the patient's condition.
- Dictating/typing discharge and transfer summaries.
- Provides comprehensive physical assessment.
- Evaluates, diagnoses, and treats new and existing patient's conditions.
- Orders appropriate tests.
- Inserts IV's and draws blood; performs medical and surgical procedures for which he/she is credentialed. Removes sutures, clips and drains postoperatively.
- Assists Physicians in medical and surgical procedures. Schedules operative procedures and changes with Operating Room personnel at the discretion of the attending physician.
- Uses prescriptive authority to write prescription medicines for patients.
- Writes/Dictates medical notes in patients' charts using the CPRS record system, indicating patient status, treatment, & procedures.
- Conducts follow-up patient care. Triages routine referrals sent by Primary Care clinics.
- Provides health education to patients and families.
- Supervises and/or coordinates the activities of patient care and support staff within the Urology clinics
- Trains new providers in the Urology department on the use of CPRS
- Develops templates for use by Urology and other Surgery service providers
- Coordinate with clerical staff to optimize the clinic schedule and clinic utilization to ensure performance criteria
- Review and revise as needed the Urology service line agreements with primary care and other specialties
- Conduct research activities related to the ordering of urologic specialty equipment
- Assigned to facility and VISN committees as needed to optimize and expedite coordinated patient care
- Works at the direction of the Chief of Surgery to recruit Urology fee providers
- Acts as preceptor to Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner and ensures didactic knowledge is applied to clinical practice.
- Completes ACLS and mandatory annual review
- Identifies areas for quality improvements and participates in improvement activities.
- Act as a mentor to other midlevel providers training within the Urology department
- Actively participates in community health education.
