Job Summary:
The Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) provides operations support services and business solutions to the community of 10,000 House Members, Officers, and staff. The CAO organization comprises more than 650 technical and administrative staff working in a variety of areas, including information technology, finance, budget management, human resources, payroll, childcare, food and vending, procurement, logistics and administrative counsel.
This paid internship* is located in the House Web Services, House Information Resources (HIR), Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), U.S. House of Representatives (House). The Web Services team provides web site and application development expertise to the Member, Committee, and Leadership offices in Congress. From application design and development to data analysis and identifying the latest technological solutions, the Web team provides site development, hosting, and support for House offices.
The CAO Web Services Team is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented intern to assist with the development, maintenance, and enhancement of our web platforms, including those built on Drupal, other content management systems (CMS), and .NET-based applications. This internship offers hands-on experience with modern web technologies in a dynamic government environment that emphasizes accessibility, automation, and data-informed decision-making.
As an intern, you will collaborate with experienced developers, designers, QA engineers, and data analysts to ensure our websites and web applications are reliable, accessible, and user focused. Minimal on-the-job training will be provided.
* paid at an annual rate of $36,469 not to exceed 120 days
** The CAO standard business hours are 8:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week internship that will require onsite attendance in Washington, D.C.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
Web Development & Testing:
· Assist with front-end and back-end development across platforms such as Drupal CMS, similar web CMSs, and/or .NET web applications.
· Assist with writing and maintaining clean, efficient, and well-documented code.
· Participate in code reviews, debugging sessions, and issue resolution with the development team.
Automation and Scripting:
· Create scripts for automating testing, monitoring, and data-related tasks using Playwright, Python, JavaScript etc.
· Conduct functional and regression testing of web applications.
· Record test outcomes, document defects, and assist in preparing test summary reports.
Accessibility Testing:
· Perform accessibility audits using tools like Axe, JAWS, NVDA and Site improve to ensure WCAG 2.2 compliance.
· Contribute to the implementation of accessibility best practices (e.g., semantic HTML, ARIA attributes, alternative text).
Data Analytics & Reporting:
· Collect and analyze web usage data using tools such as Google Analytics, Splunk logs, or similar platforms.
· Support the development of reports and dashboards to highlight key performance indicators.
Collaboration & Documentation:
· Participate in team stand-ups, sprint reviews, and planning sessions.
· Document test cases, development findings, user feedback, and bugs wherever applicable.
· Collaborate with design, and content teams to ensure cohesive and compliant digital experiences.
· Performs other official duties and special projects as assigned.
Requirements:
· Ideal candidate should be in the process or have recently obtained a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems. Data Science, or Statistics.
· Can show ability to pick up new development technologies quickly and independently; possess flexibility to adapt to changing priorities, processes, and new technologies.
· Experience with Drupal or a similar content management system, such as WordPress.
· Experience in working with relational databases such as MySQL.
· Experience with Command Line tools; Powershell.
· Knowledge of various operating systems such as Linux, Windows.
