The incumbent will work in the Patient Care Services. This position is located with the Cheyenne VA Medical Center (CVAMC). The Medical Instrument Technician (MIT)/Electrocardiogram (EKG) at this level is responsible for continuous monitoring of telemetry patients as assigned and will function as a trainee in continuous comprehensive evaluation and documentation of the patient cardiac monitoring system (telemetry). The incumbent, after successful completion of an approved basic ECG interpretation class and under the direct supervision will monitor tracings from the electronic monitoring equipment to identify all cardiac rhythm including complex rhythm disturbances, such as ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, atrial fibrillation and other dysrhythmias on monitored patients and utilize a communication software system and the wireless phone system within the CVAMC. The telemetry technician relays that critical information to the appropriate Registered Nurse (RN). Additionally, the incumbent may provide limited direct patient care such as 1:1 observation of at risk patients.
Duties of the position at the GS-4 level include but are not limited to:
The Medical Instrument Technicians (Trainee) at this level operates and monitors commonly used equipment performing routine procedures under normal supervision. The technician functions somewhat independently in carrying out these standardized procedures of limited complexity. Deviations from regular procedures, unanticipated problems, and unfamiliar situations are referred to the supervisor for a decision or help. Some assignments at this level also include developmental duties involving more complex procedures designed to prepare the technician for promotion to higher grades in a functional area. The Medical Instrument Technician (Trainee) develops the KSA's to progress to the full performance level of the GS-7 Medical Instrument Technician (EKG). Such duties would be performed under closer supervision.
Duties of the position at the GS-5 level include but are not limited to:
a. Setup and operation of electrocardiographic equipment
b. Performing specialized examinations and studies including EKG testing, and pacemaker interrogations.
c. Providing continuous monitoring of cardiac rate, rhythm, and patterns of conduction at a monitoring station
d. Measuring, printing and interpreting rhythms at designated intervals and PRN
e. Recognizing life threatening situations and notifying RN
f. Relaying critical information, specifically cardiac rhythms whether normal or abnormal including life threating and non-life threating rhythm changes to the primary nurse or charge nurse
g. Preparing patients for proper skin preparation and electrode placement
h. Performing EKGs on ROUTINE, STAT and PRN basis
Duties of the position at the GS-6 and GS-7 level include but are not limited to:
a. Performing specialized examinations and studies including continuous cardiac monitoring on remote telemetry, ambulatory monitoring of arrhythmias, EKG testing, and pacemaker interrogations.
b. Educating patients on the purpose and use of cardiac monitoring
c. Preparing patients for proper skin preparation and electrode placement
d. Appropriately processing and acquiring completed EKGs in the MUSE system
e. Identify all cardiac rhythms including complex rhythm disturbances such as but not limited to Ventricular Tachycardia, Ventricular Fibrillation, Atrial Fibrillation and other dysrhythmias
f. Ensuring patient safety by adhering to current CVAMC policy and service specific SOPs;
g. Limited direct patient care such as 1:1 observation for at risk patients
Work Schedule: 1900-0730 variable nights, holidays, and rotating weekends.
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
