  • Exercises professional case work skills in developing comprehensive assessments that examine a patient's current situation as well as relevant biopsychosocial and environmental factors.
  • Communicates relevant aspects of an assessment to the patient, family, and members of the health care team. Develops and implements appropriate treatment plans.
  • Performs case management functions including information and referral services and linkages to appropriate resources including community-based organizations. By creating these linkages, the Social Worker helps to positively influence public attitudes toward patient needs and health care.
  • Provides therapy and crisis intervention services related to patients' illness and care. Incumbent may also provide mental health therapy to patients as needed.
  • Coordinates with tribal communities, courts, and community groups to provide services and programs in the Navajo community and to meet identified needs, including community program education.
  • Participates in continuing education programs to fulfill licensure requirements and to promote professional growth. Attends and participates in interdisciplinary patient care consults.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement and TJC activities including policy implementation and revisions.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Degree: Social Work - Must fulfill all of the requirements for the master's degree in Social Work in a school accredited by the Counsel on Social Work Education.

Masters Degree with Practicum:
Applicants who complete all of the requirements for a master's degree in Social Work that included practicum are eligible for GS-09.

In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-09: Master Degree in Social Work

GS-09: Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that, is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. This specialized experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service. Examples Include: Performs individual, family, and group evidenced-based psychotherapy for children, adolescents, and adults. Services are provided to patient with a wide variety of acute and chronic mental health conditions and problems including depression, suicidal ideations/attempts, bereavement, psychotic episodes, family conflicts, substance abuse or dependence, and trauma resulting from violence or abuse of emotional, physical or sexual nature.

GS-11: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree;
OR,
1 year of Specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples include: Experience as a Social Worker in a hospital setting or clinic setting. Providing counseling to clients and families, assistance to groups and community, make independent and professional decisions with recommendations for patient care, planning while helping patients to understand and modify patterns of behavior to find resolution, exercises alertness and resourcefulness, initiative and mature judgement in program implementation.

SELECTIVE FACTOR: Position requires a current, unrestricted U.S. license as a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW), a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or a Certified Independent Social Worker (CISW). A copy of your current licensure must be submitted with your application.

Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
