The employee in this position has at least one-year qualifying experience as an LPN or equivalent and is expected to operate in accordance with all established policies and procedures. LPNs at this grade level perform all duties expected of LPNs at the level, however, they are expected to be technically proficient in initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations, requiring minimal guidance and direction.
Demonstrated ability to vary the order and sequence of assigned procedures based on the patient's condition, to use judgment in selecting the most appropriate application of procedures and guidelines, and to accurately report and record significant patient information.
Patient care activities, as appropriate to assignment, (includes, but is not limited to):
a) Provides for the patient's privacy and safety.
b) Assists with data collection for outpatients and new admissions. Observes, reports and documents signs and symptoms of patient's general condition. Actively contributes to nursing and/or interdisciplinary team conferences, exchanging information about patient needs and condition, and assists in the nursing management of patients with complex problems. Provides input into the development, implementation and evaluation of the Nursing Care Plan and/or the Interdisciplinary Plan of Care.
c)Provides direct nursing care to adult and geriatric patients according to nursing standards and CAVHS policy and procedure. This includes, but is not limited to:

8. Knowledge and skill in performing support duties for complex diagnostic tests and/or specialized practices or procedures, which include preparing the patient, assisting in the diagnostic examination, preparing and handling specialized instruments or other specialized equipment, and monitoring the patient's condition before, during, and following the procedure. Serves as a preceptor in orienting, educating, and training less experienced LPNs/LVNs or NAs/HTs related to support duties for these more complex, specialized tests/procedures.
9. Actively seeks out educational opportunities to enhance nursing knowledge and skills, sharing new knowledge gained with other staff to improve and advance nursing practice.
The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-3 to GS-6. (continued under Education Section)
