Pharmaceutical Purchasing and Distribution
a) Serve as ordering officer for pharmacy service, delegated by the VA National Acquisition Center (NAC) while maintaining annual training requirements.
b) Initiates ordering requirements of pharmaceuticals, specialty, and supply items through pharmacy prime vendors multi complex accounts or other mandatory sources. Responsible for adherence to federal contracts and compliance with federal regulations regarding open market, ensuring inventory control through perpetual evaluation.
c) Assists in determining ordering intervals and stock levels appropriate to meet changes in formulary, brand to AB rated generic drugs, contract changes, conversions, new drug indications including backorders and seasonal changes.
Administrative/Clinical
a) The employee's work will involve performing various procurement support duties involved in the use of different and unrelated procedures and methods. The incumbent(s) will spend over 25% of their time correlating transactions that are not completely standardized; dealing with continually changing deadlines and priorities; completing assigned functions that are relatively broad and varied. The employee will use different established procedures to screen incoming purchase request item descriptions for accuracy and adequacy; and will then monitor the status of the associated purchase order. The employee will review and reconcile various documents and records and resolve a variety of problems through the coordination with vendors and personnel in receiving, supply and check-in areas. The incumbent will monitor the status of deliveries, reconciling invoices to ensure quantities invoiced are accounted and received.
Pharmacy Operations
a) General
- Accurately interprets, fills, and prepares prescriptions with appropriate medications and or medical supplies for pharmacist verification.
- Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly condition by assuring that all stock and equipment are in assigned places and all shelves and counters are free of dust and debris in order to create optional work areas.
- Assures drugs and supplies are appropriately stored and secured according to USP and VA guidelines, including the storage of high-risk, look a-like sound a-like, hazardous, controlled substances, corrosive chemical, flammable liquids, and refrigerated items.
b) Sterile Product Compounding
- Follow USP 797/800 Guidelines for the compounding of all sterile preparations, including ophthalmic, cardioplegic, TPN, hazardous, large & small volume IV solutions, PCAs, etc. Manufactures uncomplicated and/or complicated parenteral admixtures to be delivered in the form of large volume, small volume, infusion syringe or other as required.
c) Unit Dose Medication Management
- Performs review of medications prepared by another pharmacy employee to be dispensed to clinic areas.
- Operates and maintains automated dispensing unit dose systems.
- Inspects packaged items for accuracy and suitability before submitting for final check, prior to distribution to hospital areas.
d) Controlled Substances Management
- Accurately interprets, fills, and readies prescriptions with appropriate medications for pharmacist verification
e) Outpatient Pharmacy Activities
- Assembles prescriptions properly with the correct drug, strength, quantity, auxiliary labels, and prescription labels. for window dispensing and mail delivery
- Utilizes bar code scanning on stock bottles to ensure accurate medication selection
