  • Directly supervises the Emergency Room department nursing staff, which includes subordinate supervisors and staff nurses
  • Supervises and performs nursing care, provides guidance to the emergency staff, demonstrates operation and care of specialized equipment such as, cardiac monitors, defibrillator, I.V. pump, and other equipment used in nursing
  • Participates in the planning, implementation, coordination and evaluation of nursing and personnel educational activities that directly and indirectly affect patient care outcomes
  • Evaluates emergency department care by reviewing staff assignments, patient charts, charge tickets, and audits

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Education: A graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

License: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States (Applicants must list their license number on their resume, along with the expiration date, OR submit a copy of their Nursing license that includes the expiration date. Acceptable verification of licensure includes a print out from a State Board of Nursing website [or other applicable license verification website that reflects your licensure status]).In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-12: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples Include: Evaluates emergency department care by reviewing staff assignments, patient charts, charge tickets, and audits; prepares schedules for completion of work; assigns work to subordinates based on priorities and capabilities of employees; Ensures compliance with Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services; Experience in medical history taking techniques, physical assessment, and normal body function.

Supervisory Abilities: This is a supervisory position and candidates, in addition to the professional qualifications listed, must have demonstrated in their work experience or training, that they possess, or have potential to develop, the qualities of successful supervision, as required for this position.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Direct patient care requires walking, standing for long periods, bending, lifting, and psychological stress. Work involves deskwork and attending meetings as required. Work is performed in the emergency department. May be exposed to infection or contagious disease. Protective measures are followed and clothing worn as dictated by established policy.

Time In Grade (Merit Promotion Candidates Only): Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
