Duties

Help
  • Determines the type, size, and positioning of rigging gear needed to support material being hoisted. Estimates cubic weights of cargo to be hoisted and its center of gravity.
  • Secures a variety of heavy material, pre-blocked flat racks and trucks prior to loading, clamps or straps loaded material, cuts blocks, wedges, and parts for wooded bracing.
  • Builds temporary decking, bulkheads, and cribbing around items; and/or plans, constructs, and repairs a variety of supply shipping and storage containers and similar items.
  • Operates one or more vehicles which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of more than 26,000 pounds up to 32,000 pounds on public roads at highway speeds or the equivalent.
  • Builds, assembles, and repairs a variety of supply, shipping and storage containers and similar items.
  • Reviews work orders and work plans. Upon receipt of work order, determines applicability of Special Packaging Instruction (SPI), contractor drawing, or blue-prints.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license/certification to operate government vehicles.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain required hazardous materials handling certifications.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.

The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is:

  • Ability to do the work of a Rigging Worker without more than normal supervision (SOE). I perform the common tasks of the job to be filled but under close supervision, such as repairing or obtaining replacements for badly worn or damaged rigging gear; cutting and assembling crate components to the dimension and shapes indicated on the drawing.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.


Physical Effort: The employee frequently lifts, holds, and carries moderately heavy objects, e.g., cables, chains, and shackles. On occasion, the employee climbs on/off platforms and in/out of open rail cars to attach rigging or to signal the crane operator. When installing rigging gear, the employee kneels, reaches, bends stoops, pushes, and pulls. Since rigging gear is attached to bulky and unwieldy material, the employee must have to work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Work involves some standing or walking for prolonged periods of time. If working in hazardous materials areas, may be subject to exposure from radiation, toxins, explosive hazards, or chemical
fumes.

Working Conditions: Work is primarily performed in a physical distribution depot environment. Most rigging work will be performed outdoors. Other work may be performed in enclosed warehouses/buildings or outdoor staging/storage areas. The employee is exposed to prevailing weather conditions. Assignments may be performed in work areas that are noisy with heavy mobile equipment (crane) and MHE traffic. Rigging assignments involve exposure to serious injuries resulting from swinging loads, falling objects, and broken cables/slings. The employee is also subject to cuts, bruises. Burns, back strains. broken bones. and other injuries Safety and Health Requirements: Employee is required to wear safety clothing and equipment appropriate for the job and work area where assigned, as directed by the supervisor.
