Duties

Help
  • Serve as the Privacy Officer for Madigan Army Medical Center and supported facilities on Joint Base Lewis McChord, and the California Medical Detachment.
  • Responsible for managing program responsibility, providing technical coordination and providing advice on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Compliance program.
  • Advise professional staff members on all phases of medical record activities to ensure compliance with established procedures.
  • Develop guidance for hospital departments and committees to educate staff on regulatory requirements related to the Joint Commission standards for medical records management
  • Educate medical staff on the technical aspects of handling policies related to the privacy of medical records information.
  • Identify the training needs of staff, provide constructive reinforcement, and mentor others on how to perform assigned tasks.
  • Analyze the organization and operation of medical records services, including medical records and indexes, and recommending and/or implementing appropriate revisions and modifications.
  • Implement policies and procedures for processing legal medical documents and insurance and correspondence requests in accordance with Federal, State, and local statutes.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunization.
  • This position requires occasional travel not to exceed 10% TDY.
  • Subject to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes reviewing medical records to ensure accurate coding of medical diagnoses and procedures; providing training to medical staff on proper medical record documentation; preparing medical-statistical reports and progressively understanding medical terminology and administrative processes. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11 or above).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
