The Exploration Research and Technology Office of Safety & Mission Assurance (SMA) at Kennedy Space Center is seeking a skilled individual to serve as a Safety and Mission Assurance Engineer. This position supports the International Space Station (ISS) payloads, Research and Technology projects, engineering, analysis, testing and quality assurance functions from design through flight operations with the objective of developing and measuring the reliability of the systems.
Summary
The Exploration Research and Technology Office of Safety & Mission Assurance (SMA) at Kennedy Space Center is seeking a skilled individual to serve as a Safety and Mission Assurance Engineer. This position supports the International Space Station (ISS) payloads, Research and Technology projects, engineering, analysis, testing and quality assurance functions from design through flight operations with the objective of developing and measuring the reliability of the systems.
Review and approve various procedures, Operation and Maintenance Instructions, Test Preparation Sheets, nonconformance reports, for selection of Mandatory Inspection Points (MIPs) in accordance with the Quality Planning and Requirements (QPRD).
Track program and contractor open issues to closure and monitor the effectiveness of corrective action plans.
Ensure quality and reliability requirements are met and perform engineering tasks related to future launch vehicles.
Serve as a technical expert, trouble-shooter, or consulting engineer, providing technical advice and guidance to the contractor in developing new procedures, equipment, systems, tools, or in performing the work required by the contract.
Evaluate the contractor through participation in the award fee process, including the evaluation of the contractor's quality-related efforts.
Consult with management and project personnel in preparing technical requirements and criteria for complex or high value projects or for the construction or modification of facilities, systems, equipment, or hardware.
Perform software (SW) assurance classification assessments, provides assessment reports to projects on SW classification levels (A through F), SW safety criticality, and software assurance efforts in order to provide adequate support for projects.
Evaluate program/project quality plans to ensure Government and contractor compliance with requirements, and to assist in quality decision making.

Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.
NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.
To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level:
Performing Safety and Mission Assurance investigations to ensure proper failure analysis or recurrence control actions;
Ensuring conformance and compliance with Safety and Mission Assurance plans, specifications, guidelines, policies, or procedures to verify and document requirements;
Supporting the establishment of guidelines and procedures for Material Review Board (MRB) actions and serving on the MRB to approve dispositions for various hardware.

Education
Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.
If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.
Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
