Duties

Help

  • Inspects, troubleshoots, removes, modifies, tests, and installs components, tanks/cells of installed fuel systems on assigned base flight and transient aircraft, industrial funded and non-funded
  • Sets up and operates support equipment and required test adapters to calibrate the systems at various rates of speed and under environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, pressure, altitude, and inlet flow
  • Uses and maintains hand and power tools and equipment required to accomplish duties. Signs off on work performed by others, clears safety of flight condition or equipment, (i.e., Red X's)
  • Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations to maintain a safe and clean work environment
  • Provides OJT and technical assistance to military, civilian, and Air Reserve Technician personnel in upgrade or qualification training

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8200 Fluid Systems Maintenance Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is the ability to do work of a PNEUDRAULIC SYSTEMS MECHANIC without more than normal supervision.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Frequently required to work in awkward or cramped conditions when positioning items in test stands or aircraft, and toexercise visual and tactile sensitivity in, cleaning sealant applications adjusting, and aligning items. Frequently handles objects weighing up to 20 pounds, and occasionally objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Hoists, lifts, and when other workers are available to assist moving heavier items. Required to lift, reach, push, pull, bend, walk, sit, and stand for prolonged periods of time. Required to enter through small accesses where work is frequently performed in cramped confined space areas of aircraft with minimum light and ventilation. Required to ascend and descend narrow vertical ladders or stagings, often while carrying tools and equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is usually performed in areas that: arc adequately lighted, ventilated, and heated. Enters confined spaces. Frequently exposed to loud noise from the movement of machinery and test equipment; to the possibility of cuts, burns, electrical shock, and bruises from moving parts of machinery; and to unpleasant conditions from dirt, grease, fuel, toxic fumes, solvents, and gases, Various protective devices such as air supplied respirators gloves, ear plugs, face shields, safety shoes and safety glasses are used. Exposed to the possibility of serious injury from slipping and falling while working from ladders and staging. May perform work outside exposing the employee to the prevailing weather conditions and intermittent slippery or uneven surfaces.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of aircraft fuel systems, and basic electrical and mechanical principles to plan, lay out, and perform work involving the repair, test, installation and maintenance of complex aircraft fuel systems designed to adjust automatically to factors such as temperature, humidity pressure, or rate of change of velocity or have sensing devices that feed back into the system information on the systems' performance. Knowledge of the complex interrelationship of numerous subassemblies that make up total sitemaps, to restore systems to optimum serviceable condition; and of the relationship of aircraft fuel systems to the structure of the aircraft or other system where the systems are located to install and test systems.
2. Knowledge of the physical principles governing the behavior of fluids (liquids and gases) as they pertain to aircraft fuel systems and their components, and of standard formulate and mathematics particularly the use of decimal values in computing shop limits and flow values. Knowledge of basic information sources, technical orders, manufacturers specification manuals, parts supply books, blueprints, and schematic diagrams to apply the requirements contained therein.
3. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices and procedures.
4. Skill to set up and operate test stands and test adapters to calibrate the systems at various rates of applicable design and under environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, pressure altitude, and inlet flow; and to conduct quality of performance and endurance tests in the aircraft fuel systems area; and to apply troubleshooting procedures to isolate malfunctions. Skill to use and adapt templates , jigs, and fixtures required to complete repairs.
5. Ability to diagnose the cause of operational failures, to determine the extent of repairs and whether to rework or replace faulty components, and to estimate time required to complete repairs, and to perform necessary rework to ensure the proper operation in accordance with standards and technical specifications.
6. Ability to interpret; and use technical orders, manufacturers' specification manuals, parts supply books, blueprints, and schematic diagrams.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
