Duties

Help
  • Perform qualitative analysis of medical records and reports to ensure accuracy, internal consistency, and correlation of recorded data within the scope of Medical Records Administration and Compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with medical-legal requirements, Joint Commission Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards, and service branch regulations.
  • Recommend changes to overlays based on revisions or deletions to ICD-10-CM and CPT codes, modifications in coding practices or nomenclatures, and changes in the clinic’s scope of practice.
  • Oversee the coding of outpatient and inpatient medical records, as well as ambulatory encounter forms, to ensure the accuracy and consistency of medical data.
  • Ensure accurate coding of diseases, injuries, diagnoses, and procedures across various ambulatory settings and multiple specialty clinics within the Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) and its outlying clinics.
  • Advise and assist medical and administrative staff on proper coding practices and usage.
  • Plan and revise work schedules and assignments to ensure an even flow and distribution of work, prioritize tasks efficiently, meet deadlines, and adapt to changes in workload.
  • Assign responsibilities to subordinates, review their work, and provide guidance and assistance on administrative matters.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security (Tier-3) clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year Probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG).
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.

In order to qualify, you must meet the Education and/or Experience requirements described below. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes coding and auditing medical records for accuracy and privacy to meet coding productivity, policy, regulatory and legal requirements; assisting with training staff on medical coding. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Health Care Administration or Health Care Management.

Combination of Education and Experience:
A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.
