Duties

Help
  • Provide technical direction and/or guidance in accomplishing difficult electrical repair projects.
  • Follow defined electrical safety practices and procedures to identify and maintain safe conditions and to avoid electrical hazards
  • Determine layout and placement of circuitry, fixtures and controls from wiring diagrams.
  • Use a variety electrical trade power tools, such as power and manual conduit benders, cable pullers, crimping termination tools, hydraulic knock out kits, drills, grinders, etc.
  • Locate defects in electrical systems, wiring, circuits, fixtures, controls and equipment.
  • Install electrical wiring systems in compliance with National Electric Code (NEC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
  • Maintain advanced lighting control systems to facilitate occupancy requirements and minimize energy usage.

  • This position is designated as moderate risk involving Public Trust. Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation including a credit check to determine suitability for Federal employment and/or the position.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Electrician ~ without more than normal supervision. Performing common Electrician maintenance on hard-to-locate defects and problems. I can perform routine repairs on lighting, electrical outlets, switches and make repairs on common wiring issues. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Works from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, hoists and performs work in hard to reach places. Required to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries items that weigh up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavier.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Works outside and inside buildings and shops. Subject to inclement weather. Exposed to dirt, dust, and grease. Subject to possibility of broken bones, acid and electrical burns, and electrical shock. Frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. At times, is required to wear protective clothing and equipment that may be confining, restrictive, and uncomfortable. Usually works on voltage up to 440 volts, and occasionally on voltage exceeding 600 volts.
