Help

The Director, Safety and Mission Assurance:

  • Is responsible for all aspects of safety, including occupational safety, health and medical services, mission assurance, software safety and assurance, reliability, and quality assurance. Also, responsible for the Ames Quality Management System and the Center's Risk Management activities.
  • Oversees and implements related government laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and requirements applicable to NASA, Ames, and the S&MA Directorate.
  • Provides system safety, hazard, and mission assurance risk identification, analysis and management services to ensure Ames Research Center projects and activities are conducted safely and successfully. Furnishes failure and non-conformance data to the S&MA Directorate personnel and staff of programs and projects.
  • Develops safety and mission assurance requirements to Center programs and projects; developing, negotiating, and assessing compliance to safety and mission assurance plans.
  • Provides S&MA and Health and Medical technical authority decisions and assessments to, and related oversight for Center programs, projects, and activities. Advises Center management on NASA S&MA requirements and coordinates and tracks S&MA activities of Center programs, projects, and activities.
  • Serves as technical expert, policy advisor, and consultant to the Center Director and senior staff on S&MA matters. Advises Center leadership and senior Agency management regarding the overall status of S&MA issues.
  • Provides leadership to ensure a safe and healthy work environment for all employees, ensures employees are provided adequate training and instructions on safety issues, and helps ensure that safety is a top priority in facility management and operations.
  • Fosters and continually drives a culture of engagement, diversity, inclusiveness, excellence, and innovation within and outside of the organization and NASA.   • The individual selected will be required to file an 'Executive Branch Personnel Financial Disclosure Report' (OGE-278) in accordance with the Ethics in Government Act of 1978.
  • Initial Senior Executive Service (SES) Career appointee is subject to a one-year probationary period.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation commensurate with the risk and sensitivity level of the position.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment and random drug testing may be required.
  • Must meet qualifications requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

You must have the skill and ability to perform the duties described above as demonstrated by progressively responsible supervisory/leadership experience, normally obtained over several years by serving in positions at the GS-15 level or equivalent.

To meet the minimum qualification requirements for this position, you MUST address each Executive Core Qualification (ECQ) and Mandatory Technical Qualification (MTQ) separately. If you fail to do so, your application will be rated ineligible. We recommend you provide two (2) examples of relevant experience for each ECQ. MANDATORY TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

MTQ 1- Demonstrated experience in leading and directing occupational safety, health, or medical activities for a highly technical engineering and/or scientific organization.

MTQ 2- Demonstrated experience in leading and managing an organization responsible for safety and mission assurance functions, processes, and procedures for programs/projects. This includes system safety, hazard, and mission assurance risk identification, analysis and management services.
