This position is located in Acadia National Park and serves as the Chief of Project Management at Acadia National Park and St. Croix Island International Historic Site, reporting to the park deputy superintendent. The incumbent supervises an interdisciplinary staff of project managers, a construction inspector, and an FMSS specialist to accomplish this work. The position serves as a member of the park's leadership team.
Acadia National Park has an extensive number of projects each year, to include high visibility projects funded through the Legacy Restoration Fund (LRF) of the Great America Outdoors Act. The park has approximately $134M in deferred maintenance, and in addition to managing major projects funded through LRF or the Line Item Construction Program, each year this position will manage $2M-$4M in cyclic and repair/rehab projects, $2M - $8M in road paving or bridge maintenance projects, and $3M-$4M in Recreation Fee supported projects. The park also works closely with its primary philanthropic partner, Friends of Acadia, to implement projects funded through donated funds. The selectee will be the first to hold this position and will lead this newly created division as they manage this wide range of projects. The duties of the job require supervision and leadership of a high functioning team, balancing the management and planning of dozens of projects each year, and serving as the park's lead contracting officer's representative and liaison with the regional contracting office.
Acadia National Park protects more than 47,000 acres of stunning scenery, nationally-significant cultural resources and a wide variety of natural habitats along the rocky, mid-coast of Maine "where the mountains meet the sea." The duty station, Bar Harbor, Maine, is located 50 miles southeast of Bangor on Mount Desert Island, which is connected to the mainland by a highway with a short bridge. Temperatures generally range from under 10 degrees in the winter to 80 degrees in the summer, with the ocean influencing the park's character and weather. Local communities offer schools, grocery stores, health care facilities, banks and small businesses. Ellsworth (20 miles away) and Bangor offer a broad range of amenities. The local housing market is somewhat limited and expensive, with more affordable housing options available within 30 miles of Bar Harbor. Acadia offers almost unlimited recreational opportunities year-round; you can drive the park's scenic and historic motor roads, hike from oceanside to mountaintop on over 125 miles of highly crafted hiking trails, bike along the gravel carriage roads that are free of motorized traffic, or explore the rockbound waters of the Atlantic or a pristine lake by boat. With four million visits per year, the park and local communities are extremely busy in the summer. For more information about the park visit www.nps.gov/acad/ PARK CONTACT: For more information regarding this position or duty station please contact the Supervisor, Brandon Bies, via email at brandon_bies@nps.gov.

GS-0808 - Architect:
1. Possess a degree in either Professional Architecture or related field that included 60 semester hours of course work in architecture or related discipline of which at least (1) 30 semester hours were in architectural design, and (2) 6 semester hours were in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems.

2. Possess a combination of education and experience--college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the arts and sciences underlying professional architecture, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the architectural principles, methods, and techniques and their applications to the design and construction or improvement of buildings. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by at least one of the following: 1) Related Curriculum: Degree in architectural engineering may be accepted as satisfying in full the basic requirements, provided the completed course work in architectural engineering provided knowledge, skills, and abilities substantially equivalent to those provided in the courses specified in paragraph A. The curriculum for a degree in either architecture or architectural engineering covers function, esthetics, site, structure, economics, mechanical-electrical, and other engineering problems related to the design and construction of buildings primarily (but not exclusively) intended to house human activities. The courses required for a degree in architecture generally place emphasis upon planning, esthetics, and materials and methods of construction, while the courses for an architectural engineering degree place equal or greater weight on the technical engineering aspects such as structural systems, mechanical systems, and the properties of materials. Because of this difference in emphasis, persons with degrees in architecture may have a preference for work assignments that offer greater opportunities for them to express their artistic and creative abilities. As a result, they may be more concerned with planning and design aspects of architecture, and persons with degrees in architectural engineering may be more engaged in aspects emphasizing technical engineering considerations. 2) Experience: An applicant lacking a degree in architecture must have had 1 year of experience in an architect's office or in architectural work for each year short of graduation from a program of study in architecture. In the absence of college courses, 5 years of such experience is required. This experience must have demonstrated that the applicant has acquired a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional architecture.
