Law Enforcement included detection, investigation, apprehension, and prosecution under applicable laws, rules, and regulations enacted to insure the protection and safe use of National Park resources.
Incident response and management, emergency medical services, day and overnight climbing patrols. foot and/or stock-based day and overnight wilderness patrols, winter day and overnight ski patrols and snow surveys, technical rescue, and helicopter rescue.
Educate, interpret, and inform visitors about resources, conservation, laws, and regulations.
Full range of supervisory duties: recruitment, hiring, personnel management, scheduling, recommending personnel actions, performance reviews etc. for a seasonal staff of approximately five non-commissioned climbing rangers and additional climbing stewards and other volunteers. Supplement other commissioned supervisors in managing permanent commissioned wilderness rangers as needed.
Career Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career Appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. Based on operational needs and funding you will work for a minimum of 13 pay periods and a maximum of 25 pay periods and you will be in a non-pay status for the remaining 1-13 pay periods each year.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position as suitable for consistent telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
This position does not require occupancy of government housing - No park housing is expected to be available.
This is a secondary-administrative law enforcement position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S. C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U. S. C. 8412 (d) (FERS). PLEASE NOTE: Applicants may meet qualification requirements but may not be eligible for special retirement coverage. If such an applicant is selected, they will be placed in the regular retirement system. To be eligible for Secondary retirement coverage under CSRS, an employee must transfer directly (without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a primary position to a secondary position. To be eligible for Secondary retirement coverage under FERS, an employee must: 1) transfer directly (without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a primary position to a secondary position, AND 2) complete 3 years of service in a primary rigorous position including any such service during which no FERS deductions were withheld, AND 3) must be continuously employed in a secondary position(s) since moving from a primary rigorous position, except for any break in employment from a secondary position that began with involuntary separation (not for cause). It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure this office has enough information to determine your special retirement status to ensure you do not lose benefits (normally through submission of your work history or other documentation that demonstrates work history of approved covered positions). To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Physical Demands: As the supervisor over a variety of visitor service functions that may demand both sudden and sustained physical stress, the incumbent must be in excellent physical and mental condition in order to perform under emergency situations safely and competently. Incumbent must
maintain a documented year-round fitness-training program and annually participate in the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB). Assignments often include long periods of standing, hiking. climbing, or skiing in uneven, steep, rough, and mountainous terrain. Strenuous exertion is frequently required in law enforcement including gaining physical compliance of combative suspects, firefighting, search and rescue, medical and related emergency activities. Lifting or carrying of equipment weighing more than fifty pounds. such as search and rescue or firefighting equipment, is required. Some assignments may require carrying heavy packs over rugged, steep terrain in temperatures ranging from -20F to 115F degrees. Assignments may also be in isolated outdoor environments where the incumbent is frequently exposed to severe weather conditions. The incumbent is subject to assignment at all hours without regard to fixed work schedules or lieu days. These routine and emergency situations often require clear reasoning and decisive action under conditions of extreme mental and physical stress.
Work Environment: The work requires long overnight hiking in the Yosemite wilderness under a wide variety of climactic conditions and in elevations exceeding 12,000 feet. Climbing patrols range from short climbs to multi-day big wall climbs, to alpine environments. Winter use will involve cross country skiing, sometimes for several consecutive days and often involve overnight snow camping. The Yosemite wilderness ranges in elevation from 2,900 feet to over 13,000 feet. Climactic conditions range from temperatures over 100 degrees during the summer months to well below freezing during the winter months. While administrative duties are performed in an office setting, the balance of duties are discharged throughout the wilderness with exposure to climate prevalent at the time. Responsibilities such as law enforcement, search and rescue, and general wilderness patrol are often performed under hazardous conditions and require a high degree of safety consciousness. Fire duties will expose the incumbent to smoke and heat.
