Incumbent performs a mixture of routine, multiple, and varying assignments under the limited direction of a manager, team leader, or more experienced technical specialist. Demonstrates some independence in planning time and using assigned resources to accomplish assignments and small projects. May perform some leadership functions for small projects/programs/teams.
Incumbent is an individual contributor and a member of a team. Applies experience and detailed technical knowledge of analytical chemistry and forensic toxicology to plan and accomplish assignments. Typical assignments may include: analyze biological samples for drug/chemicals, develop new methods, conduct scientific research with minimal oversight, and helps prepare scientific papers for publication in peer reviewed journals. Work is reviewed periodically during assignments and at completion to ensure timeliness and technical compliance with the requirements of the project or other work activity. Work activities typically support the activities of the organizational unit and may affect project/program objectives for the major subdivision and the LOB/SO. In some areas, the work may affect the safety and security of customers.
Established policies/procedures provide guidance for most assignments, but allows some discretion to select the most appropriate approach. Develops test methods, experimental protocols, and conducts studies to determine the presence and impact on performance of various drugs and other toxic substances. Prepares, tabulates, interprets, and analyzes data. Prepares biological specimens for toxicology analysis according to standard operating procedures and best toxicology practices for the Forensic Science Section. Maintains and operates complex toxicology equipment such liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS), gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), gas chromatography/fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Position requires proficiency with analytical chemistry/toxicology chromatographic techniques including, but not limited to, LC/MS/MS and/or LC/TOF and GC/MS. Position requires proficiency with the extraction and analysis of drugs in biological matrices.
Reviews collected data and interprets the results. Provides assistance and guidance to other members of the Forensic Sciences laboratory on the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Provides assistance to inspectors and the Quality Assurance group when the laboratory is being inspected for accreditation. Works with human and animal tissue and body fluid samples, which may be infected with blood-borne pathogens. Maintains professional expertise through continual education and review of the scientific literature. Explores new and developing technologies to determine the applicability for use in answering complex scientific questions. Maintains professional contacts with other research scientists in the field of forensic toxicology to identify new and developing technology for use in the Forensic Sciences Research Section. Prepares and publishes research articles for publication in peer reviewed journals.
Contacts are primarily internal to the organizational unit, major subdivision, and LOB/SO, with some contact with customers and external organizations. Contacts are typically intended to share information, provide data and/or written analyses, or to discuss the status of assignments. In some technical areas, may have regular contact with customers and/or external organizations.

Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
