As an Attorney-Advisor (General), this position furnishes legal counsel, advice, and guidance to Coast Guard Officials over a wide spectrum of complex and difficult legal matters, including real property, civilian and military personnel law, environmental law, intellectual property, information law, administrative law, and ethics. The majority of this position’s duties will be focused on real property matters, including advising and reviewing legal and administrative documents and correspondence concerning all forms of federal acquisition of permanent and temporary rights in real property from non-federal entities, as well as interagency and inter-service transfers; use of property held by Coast Guard units, to include use by third parties; and all forms of action leading to the removal of real property from the Coast Guard's asset inventory. This includes writing or reviewing opinions on case law, statutes, regulations, and executive branch policy. The position will also advise on basic fiscal law issues that commonly arise within the real property practice area, such as expenditure of funds to improve leased property. The vast majority of the work is substantive legal analysis, advice, and advocacy; the exact nature of this legal work will vary over time.
