This position of Engineering Equipment Operator/Animal Packer, is located in Yosemite National Park in the Facility Management Division, and is a Career Seasonal Full-time appointment. The non-pay status is anticipated in the month of January, but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

As a Engineering Equipment Operator (Animal Packer), operate gasoline and diesel powered mobile equipment such as graders, backhoes, loaders, power sweepers, concrete mixers, air compressors, sanders, and trucks with snow plow blades attached. Operate trucks from 24,000 to 54,000 GVW with various transmissions.
Operator will perform the following duties with the above equipment: clean ditches, haul various materials and equipment, rough grade gravel roads, sweep parking areas and road systems, remove snow and ice from roadways and sand icy road surfaces during winter months. Equipment may be used in all other facets of required road maintenance. Preventative maintenance will be performed before operating equipment.
During summer months the incumbent performs the full range of animal packer duties include packing supplies, materials, and equipment onto pack mules or horses. Leading a string of up to 6 pack animals transporting supplies, materials, and equipment into back country work sites. Loading and hauling horses and mules by truck and trailer.
Move trail crew camps and trail opening work crews to new locations with pack mules, makes minor repairs to packing equipment and tack gear as required, shoes saddle horses and pack mules in remote back country locations, and in front country staging locations.
Make diagnosis and treats minor horse/mule injuries and illnesses, and trains young mules for packing.
There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Physical Demands: Incumbent will be working on projects ranging from 2,000 to 10,000 feet in elevation in mountainous terrain under moderate to severe weather conditions. Incumbent will be exposed to dust, grease, noise, and vibrations from equipment. During winter the incumbent will encounter icy, slippery walking surfaces and during summer months extended periods riding and walking. Will lift and load objects weighing up to 100 pounds on to stock for transport.
Working Conditions: The incumbent receives work instructions in Yosemite Valley from Animal Packer Supervisor during summer and Valley Roads Supervisor during winter months. Incumbent is subject to weekend work schedules, long hours, night shift work, and rotating schedules. During the summer season the incumbent is subject to 10 day logging runs, long hours, and weekend work schedules. During winter months the incumbent will wear and maintain the work uniform to conform to the NPS uniform standard.You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
