This is an interdisciplinary position in the Data Analytics Section of the Medical Informatics Department at the James J Peters VA Medical Center. The mission of Medical Informatics is to provide direct analytical support to the leadership of the James J Peters VA Medical Center. As well, we provide data analytic support to other VISN2 Medical Centers through reimbursement arrangements.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
Data Analysis and Modeling:
The incumbent will provide subject-matter expertise and thought leadership on machine learning and predictive analytics techniques. Conduct intermediate and advanced statistical analysis, such as linear regression, ANOVA, time-series analysis, classification models, neural networks, decision trees, as well as analysis of unstructured data. Through the use of a variety of statistical software including R and Python the individual will perform data analysis to determine quality, utilization, and effectiveness of a multitude of hospital operations and outcomes measures.
In addition, the statistical models will be integrated into the reports used to identify patterns and outliers as tools for management decision support. The incumbent will analyze findings, evaluate the statistical limitations of available data, and specify the range of logically possible explanations of the findings, discover the meaning of facts and present original or derived data in their most pertinent form, which may include text, graphs, charts, tables, and models.
Data Extraction and Processing:
The incumbent will retrieve data required for analysis from various data sources including corporate data warehouse databases, online analytical processing (OLAP) applications, comma-separated values (CSV) files, VISTA and various other reporting tools available through the national Veteran Support Service Center (VSSC) program. The retrieval requires individual to be knowledgeable of Structured Query Language (SQL) or any other methods of querying a database.
Extracted data will be validated for accuracy, completeness, consistency and uniformity. Data wrangling techniques will be applied to transform and combine data of different formats and sources into an appropriate design required for downstream analytics.
Data Warehouse/Reporting:
The incumbent will assist other analysts in the department and Business Intelligence Service Line (BISL) in maintenance and development of the program's reporting database located on the CDW. The project database is used for daily updates required for the SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) reports hosted on the VAMC's Data Analytics portal. A critical aspect of the job is insuring that the data processes and architecture are optimized and efficient. Also the reports are required to comply with national standards and will frequently need to be updated and/or migrated to various servers.
The incumbent will develop solutions for analytical data and reporting through the Business Intelligence (BI) platforms (Power BI, Tableau, etc.) and dynamic reports with multiple parameters and drill downs using SSRS (SQL report builder). He/she will insure that reports comply with the security standards required to protect sensitive patient information.
Data Analytics Coordinator:
The incumbent will be expected to exercise initiate and to collaborate effectively with VAMC, VISN and national stakeholders including leadership, project/program managers and others to turn data into critical information and knowledge that can be used to make sound organizational decisions. Offering creative and innovative techniques to support various initiatives linked to the strategic goals of the VHA. He/she will participate and facilitate in regular system improvement meetings. As a data analytics coordinator employee will understand the customer needs and translate them into technical project designs and data driven insight.
He/she will need to be able to present back their findings to the others by exposing their assumptions and validation work in a way that can be easily understood by their counterparts. These professionals will need a combination of business focus, strong analytical and problem solving skills and programming knowledge to be able to quickly cycle hypothesis through the discovery phase of the project.
He/she will provide consultation and training to the data analytics in the area of expertise. Also, the incumbent will provide education to the general facility staff on various analytics topics.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm
