This position serves as a dispatcher (Public Safety) within the Visitor and Resource Protection Division at Indiana Dunes National Park and reports directly to the Supervisory Dispatcher. This position is located within the Communications Center at the park's Headquarters in Porter, Indiana.
Provides dispatch services for Indiana Dunes National Park, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Pictured Rock National Lakeshore, Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway, and the Great Lakes Fire Management Zone.
Serves as a certified operator of several public safety computer networks to include the National Criminal Information Network (NCIC), National Law Enforcement Communications System (NLETS), and the Indiana Data and Communications System (IDACS).Performs dispatch and call taking services for public safety related incidents and operations.
Coordinates responses to incidents; initiates appropriate response of personnel and apparatus in accordance with agency plans, guides, and protocols; provides communications and logistical support to responders; maintains status on resources and incidents.
Operates a multi-frequency radio console. Prioritizes radio traffic and related communications.
Monitors a variety of systems to include: Linel Alarm systems, Everbridge emergency notification system, Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD), Incident Management Analysis and Reporting System (IMARS), Stancil recording system, Mitel phone systems, Radio Over Internet Protocol (ROIP), and Milestone CCTV system.
Acts as an information source for the general public and to other law enforcement agencies by telephone, computer, and in person.
Area Information: Indiana Dunes National Park is a 15,000-acre park located at the southern tip of Lake Michigan, approximately 45 miles southeast of Chicago, Illinois. The park is among the top 10 most visited National Park units annually. Small towns and resort communities on the beaches of Lake Michigan, and farms, interspersed with large tracts of woodlands and wetlands, surround the park. All services are available in the communities, to include schools, colleges, shopping, and other major amenities. The park hugs 15 miles of Lake Michigan's southern shoreline, and includes several historic districts, and over 50 miles of horse, bike and hiking trails over rugged dunes, mysterious wetlands, sunny prairies, meandering rivers, and peaceful forests! The park also surrounds the 2,000-acre Indiana Dunes State Park, and a large residential environmental education center. The Park is the birthplace of the science of ecology and has one of the most diverse plant communities in the National Park Service system. The park further supports several geographically dispersed units within the park. The area has weather typical of the Midwest with temperatures normally ranging from 0 degrees in the winter to 90 degrees in the summer. No government housing available, however, many reasonably priced houses and rental properties exist in the surrounding communities.
There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level of this announcement.

Physical Demands: The work is mostly sedentary with occasional field trips. Walking, bending and stooping are required, primarily in the operation of the equipment and in the maintenance of records. Work involves occasional lifting of boxes and supplies up to fifty pounds.
Must be able to type proficiently; see written/typed/printed information clearly; understand, read and write English proficiently; and be able to clearly hear information being communicated over a two-way radio or telephone. The incumbent's voice must be clear, audible and tone effective with words plainly spoken and understandable in English.
The incumbent will work day, evening and night shifts but may be required to work long, unscheduled or irregular shifts for extended periods of time under stressful conditions. The incumbent may be required to respond to call-outs after hours.
