Animal Packer at this level hike to backcountry toilet facilities to process waste and recycling, while leading llamas or other pack animals to pack tools and supplies in and solid waste out. Animal Packers must use and maintain equipment and operate vehicles and pickup trucks to transport supplies, materials and pack animals. Backcountry travel is required for this position.
Physical Demands: When incumbent is maintaining backcountry toilets, he/she must be able to hike distances of 2 to 12 miles at elevations ranging from 7,500 feet to those exceeding 12,000 feet using a string of llamas to pack in supplies and equipment and waste out. Loads animals in order to transport them trail heads. Light to moderate physical effort is required in performing custodial duties. Incumbent is required to walk, stand, bend, reach, stoop and kneel for extended periods of time. Moderately heavy physical effort is used occasionally in moving, setting up, and working from ladders and scaffolding. Use of heavy powered cleaning equipment is required, but not on a continual basis. Incumbent exerts light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate hand and foot controls. He/she exerts moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds and the occasional handling of heavier objects while loading cargo with assistance of other workers.
Working Conditions: Work indoors is performed in areas which normally have adequate heat, light and ventilation. He/she is exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in cleaning toilets, urinals, etc. Care is required to avoid serious injuries when working on ladders and scaffolds and when using heavy powered equipment. At risk for infectious diseases. Operates vehicles in all kinds of weather in a controlled traffic environment throughout the park. Exposed to dirt and fume and to the possibility of cuts, bruises and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle. is exposed to sun, rain, snow, high winds, and temperature ranging from -40 degrees to 90+ degrees F. Works at elevations ranging from 7500 ft. to 12500 ft.
There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).
If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.
The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.
