Major duties for this position include but are not limited to the following:
With minimal supervision processes, prepares, analyzes, and reports results for samples submitted by Agency field staff involved in OSHA compliance monitoring; Interprets and evaluates analytical results in order to determine their significance to establish regulatory standards; on occasion solves complex and obscure analytical sampling and analysis problems requiring specialized knowledge; ensures the accuracy of new and novel solutions; with supervisory approval modifications to laboratory quality assurance; developing new analytical methods and/or new approaches; establishing sampling and analytical method validity for new or non-routine monitoring procedures used in field investigations; develops and refines quality assurance procedures used by the analytical staff; participates in and performs a variety of collateral duties necessary to maintain AIHA accreditation.
Contacts field compliance staff to fill in data gaps on sampling forms, clarify analytical request, and assist with data interpretation; Provides on-demand communication with compliance field inspectors including technical assistance on analytical and sampling problems and non-routine or unanticipated circumstances; Follows all required laboratory accreditation quality system and legal chain of custody requirements to process, prepare, analyze, and report results submitted by Agency field staff involved in OSHA compliance monitoring; provides technical advice concerning a specialty area within the Agency; serves as an expert witness for OSHA in litigation cases, attesting to validity and application of sampling and analytical techniques used for the analysis of materials and compounds; prepares and delivers presentations and provides (as an Agency representative) technical information and scientific findings to other Agency Offices.
Works diligently to attain qualification within knowledge and experience framework required of a senior level analyst: Completes self study courses to learn Industrial hygiene concepts and acquire knowledge in the specialty area assigned; Reviews analytical data obtained by other chemists for technical and mathematical accuracy, and reviews project reports prepared by other chemists for clarity and technical validity in a timely manner.
