The Nurse Officer of the Day (NOD) meets the educational, experiential, and competency requirements defined in the Nurse Qualifications Standards. As a member of the interdisciplinary team, he/she will ensure safe, efficient, and effective care to all patients. The NOD demonstrates leadership and initiative in compliance with the mission, vision, and values of the Medical Center and/or VISN and facilities operations in the absence of the Medical Center Director/Associate Director for Patient Care Services/designee, i.e., during WHEN hours. The NOD will work collaboratively with the Medical Officer of the Day (MOD), Psychiatry Officer of the Day (POD), and the Administrative Office of the Day (AOD). As the senior nurse leader during WHEN hours, the NOD will be responsible for the effective and efficient utilization of assigned manpower resources to meet staffing requirements which impact patient care during WHEN.
The incumbent will work in concert with the Associate Chief Nurses, Nurse Managers, and Charge Nurses to ensure patient care and staffing level issues that occur during WHEN hours are handled in the most effective and efficient manner possible in accordance with the standards of nursing care and nursing practice in place at the Medical Center. The incumbent supports facility and service initiatives, including cultural transformation and patient centered care. The NOD uses critical thinking skills and sound judgment to ensure positive patient/staff outcomes; to demonstrates ethical practice, and to follow Medical Center policy in all routine and emergency situations. The NOD supports the Medical Center's mission by possessing and exemplifying the Eight Core Competencies of the High Performance Development Model.
