This is the position of a non-supervisory Park Ranger (Seasonal) who performs a variety of tasks associated with the use and management of park resources. The purpose of the position is to perform duties designed to facilitate visitor understanding of park resources; facilitate visitor enjoyment, induce visitor behavior and gain friendly compliance with the laws and rules for safe use of the park; and encourage visitors to develop a sense of stewardship for park resources.

May lead caving tours, which requires wearing a helmet and knee pads, and leading groups off-trail in a confined, undeveloped cave environment.
Conducts basic research of topics for the purpose of providing interpretive programs, both orally and/or in writing. Presents a variety of formal and informal programs including orientation talks, environmental education programs, conducted walks, demonstrations and campfire programs based on the interpretive themes of the park. Programs vary in length and are presented to diverse audiences. Drafts text for posting on the park's website and Facebook page.
Operates information desk at the Visitor Center. Greets visitors, provides basic orientation to the site and local area, provides safety messages, responds to questions in person and by telephone, operates park radio, assists with trip planning and issues backcountry camping permits, works in the cooperating association sales area, and restocks supplies.
Uses and maintains audio/visual equipment and other interpretive equipment and keeps equipment in operational order. Utilizes computers and completes accurate visitor statistics. Maintains bulletin boards and various interpretive exhibits.
Serves as designated fee collection officer. Issues/sells interagency Senior, Access, and Annual Passes. Accurately maintains records, passports, and funds according to guidelines. Performs opening and closing shift functions, completes shift reports, safeguards funds collected and personal accountable stock.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).
If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.
The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Physical Demands: The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, etc. At Wind Cave regular on- and off-trail travel in the cave is required, including climbing over large rocks or boulders and belly-crawling through cave openings as little as 10 ½ inches high. Occasional travel to the elevator building "penthouse" is required and can only be accessed by climbing a vertical three-story metal rung ladder.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather conditions. At Wind Cave the cave tour routes are dimly lit and the remainder of the cave has no permanent lighting. Tour routes include up to 450 stairs.You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
