Note FAA AIR Aerospace Engineer Hiring Initiative 2021: This position is located in Aircraft Certification Service (AIR). This vacancy announcement may be used to fill future vacancies in any of the other AIR Division Offices. The incumbent serves as an Aerospace Engineer performing basic and routine (but progressively more difficult) assignments under close direction and detailed instruction provided by a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced engineer. Work is reviewed frequently during assignments and at completion for all aspects of quality.
Applies basic knowledge of engineering principles, theories, and concepts in order to accomplish aerospace engineering assignments. Incumbent is responsible for applying safety management principles using experience and engineering knowledge and risk management techniques in one or more of the technical disciplines in AIR. Serves as an Aerospace Engineer and may have responsibility for one or more of the following areas: regulatory oversight of aircraft certification programs and continuing operational safety in propulsion systems, airframe/structures, electrical systems, crash worthiness, flight test, engines, cabin safety, human-to-machine (previously known as human factors), avionics, emerging technologies, or mechanical systems.
Incumbent is responsible for applying safety management principles using engineering knowledge and risk management techniques to analyze and evaluate the safety and reliability of systems or components. Responsibilities may include review and evaluation of regulatory compliance for aircraft certification projects and initiation of safety determinations for continuing airworthiness. May assist with monitoring the Designated Engineering Representatives (DERs) for technical and procedural compliance to the regulations as required. Coordinates with the manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced engineer to plan time and use assigned resources to accomplish assignments.
Contacts are primarily internal to the organizational unit and with a Technical Advisor, mentor, Lead or Manager and other employees to share information, provide data and/or written analyses, and to discuss the status of assignments. Limited contact may also occur with the public and contractors, under supervision. The incumbent may also work with applicants for design approvals related to 14 CFR parts 23, 25, 27, 29, or 33 and other 14 CFR parts of the Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) as assigned. The incumbent will become familiar with and utilize established policies/procedures, providing detailed guidance for variety of assignments. Refers problems and work issues to the manager or more experienced engineer when existing guidelines are not available or applicable.
Will complete a variety of specialized training assignments/requirements to further enhance the understanding and complexity of the organization and work assignments. The work activities supports the work of other employees and contribute to activities of the organizational unit.

Basic Requirements: Successful completion of a full four-year professional engineering curriculum leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in engineering in an accredited college or university. To be acceptable the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the ABET as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics;

Alternative Requirements: Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.
