Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. For Saugus, you will work from approximately May to November, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. For Salem, you will work from approximately March to November, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.
As a Park Guide some typical duties include:
Welcome and orient a high volume of diverse individuals or groups while maintaining a professional demeanor. Provide informal interpretation and public orientation to a park or recreation area (e.g., current events, resource management or environmental projects, and overview of areas natural, cultural, and/or historical resources). Resolve customer or visitor complaints by taking corrective action or referring the issue to a supervisor when appropriate.
Provide information to the public using information or materials on management policies, and legislative updates on issues affecting the natural, historical, and/or cultural preservation of the area. Communicate orally in person, and/or over the phone to provide information to the public or others and explain the significance and encourage stewardship of the area's natural, cultural, and/or historical resources for public awareness.
Explain the importance of rules or regulations concerning the protection of the area's resources, and/or the safety of visitors. Assess a situation and exercise sound independent judgment in accordance with well-established policies, procedures and techniques. Notify appropriate staff of visitor and resource needs such as major maintenance issues, safety hazards, and natural resource issues, etc.
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
