WHAT IS THE RESEARCH, APPLIED ANALYTICS AND STATISTICS (RAAS) DIVISION? Research, Applied Analytics & Statistics (RAAS) anticipates and meets customers’ needs by providing leading research, analytical, statistical and technology services. RAAS provides an intellectually challenging & supportive environment for our employees. We are the leading source for data analytics, analytical & statistical support, research tools & information, and breakthrough technologies within the IRS. RAAS recommendations, studies & data are effectively used to assist in the administration of the U.S. tax system and to improve IRS performance. Our projects encompass a variety of subjects, including statistical analyses, program evaluations, research on topics affecting tax administration, compliance studies & the administration of enterprise research resources. RAAS serves as a consultant to the IRS Commissioner and the Senior Executive Team & is a strategic partner for decisions affecting Servicewide operations.
WHAT DOES A DATA SCIENTIST DO? The Data Scientist utilizes advanced analytical, statistical, & computer programming skills to develop data- driven solutions to difficult business challenges. As a data scientist, you are responsible for conducting data-centric projects to provide insight and informed decisions for mission- oriented programs of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which may impact multiple program segments, divisions, the Service, or segments of the taxpayer population. This is accomplished by utilizing a wide range of technical competencies such as statistics and machine learning, coding languages, data wrangling, and reporting and visualization techniques. The Data Scientist may lead team or cross functional projects, and will apply critical thinking, problem solving and ability to communicate complex analysis to advance the use of data-driven decision making in IRS operations.

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Mathematical Statistician All Grades:
You must have a Bachelor's degree that included courses in mathematics and statistics totaling at least 24 semester hours. This course work must have included a minimum of 12 semester hours of mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics. Courses acceptable toward meeting the mathematics course requirement must have included at least four of the following: differential calculus, integral calculus, advanced calculus, theory of equations, vector analysis, advanced algebra, linear algebra, mathematical logic, differential equations, or any other advanced course in mathematics for which one of these was a prerequisite. Courses in mathematical statistics or probability theory with a prerequisite of elementary calculus or more advanced courses will be accepted toward meeting the mathematics requirements, with the provision that the same course cannot be counted toward both the mathematics and the statistics requirement. OR
A combination of education and experience that includes at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as described above; and Experience that showed evidence of statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying known statistical techniques to data such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.
In addition to the above, you must meet the requirements described below:
GS-09 LEVEL: You must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes at least three of the following:
You may substitute education for specialized experience specialized experience as follows: Two (2) full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education in in Mathematics, statistics or related field of study from an accredited college or university OR Master’s or equivalent degree in Mathematics, statistics or related field of study from an accredited college or university.
GS-11 LEVEL: You must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes at least five of the following:

OR Ph. D. or equivalent doctoral degree Mathematics, statistics or related field of study from an accredited college or university.
