The position is located in the William J. Hughes Technical Center, Aviation Research Division, Structures and Propulsion Branch, Fuels and Energy Section. The Structures and Propulsion Branch conducts research to advance scientific knowledge to establish an operational environment that is free of accidents and fatalities. This is achieved by continuously improving the scientific understanding of aviation propulsion systems, atmospheric hazards such as aircraft icing, new structural materials in aircraft, and the necessary support to maintain older aircraft for safe operations which enables new aircraft to be safer, more efficient and environmentally cleaner, while older aircraft can continue to operate safely.
The incumbent of this position serves as a research engineer regarding safety related aviation research in the areas of current and future aviation propulsion technologies and electrical aircraft systems. This research includes various types of propulsion technologies such as traditional, electric, fuel cell, and hybrid-electric along with related aircraft electrical systems.
Some duties and responsibilities are as follows:
Applies experience and advanced knowledge of engineering principles, theories, and concepts applicable to his/her discipline to accomplish assignments and to develop plans and techniques to improve programs and policies. Understands how his/her technical area interacts with or is affected by other disciplines and considers the objectives of the major subdivision and LOB/SO when developing, integrating, and implementing solutions to diverse, complex problems.
Performs multiple, varying, and complex assignments and plans the implementation of projects/programs under limited direction of a manager, project/program manager, or more experienced engineer. May act as a contributing specialist on large work activities or as a team leader for single or small work activities.
Provides technical information and assistance during the acquisition and procurement cycle by reviewing contractor proposals for adequacy of design, operation, maintenance, and implementation; by conducting feasibility, cost-benefit and related studies to ensure technical and fiscal adequacy and timeliness; by monitoring designated phases of contractor performance; and by submitting evaluations and recommendations to supervisor/ lead.
Actively participates in technical community research groups to define potential areas of research, in regards to the development /test/ acquisition/implementation that impacts the certification guidance, training and policies.
Prepares preliminary engineering specifications, drawings, valuations, and other documents for the development and/or procurement of laboratory capabilities. Enters and tracks PCard and PR purchase requests in acquisition systems.
Contacts are internal and external. May act as a key technical point of contact for assigned activities. Contributes to the preparation of management/technical reports or contractual documents, and may communicate the overall results of a project or work activity to FAA management, sponsors, the aviation and aerospace industries, and other external parties.
Established policies/procedures provide guidance for most assignments, but allows considerable discretion to select the most appropriate approach or to recommend new approaches. Assignments typically require solutions that are to be derived by interpreting and extrapolating from situations that were faced in the past. Provides recommendations to improve work processes.
