The Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM), Medical Specialties Division (AAM-200), Medical Appeals Branch (AAM-240) processes medical appeals for airmen and/or Air Traffic Control Specialists (ATCSs).
Incumbent will be responsible for processing formal requests and resolving issues presented to the Federal Air Surgeon (FAS); as it relates to the Airmen Certification Program, Part 67 of Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR); and FAA Order 3930.3 series and other applicable orders.

Established guidelines include Code of Federal Regulations, FAA Order 3930.3 series, airman and ATCS medical guidelines; organizational directives, policies, precedent files, and instructions; DOT, FAA, and other Federal agency administrative regulations and directives. Guidelines provide a general framework but allow discretion for employee to select the most appropriate approach in order to complete his/her duties.
Examines medical appeals/applications and the supporting medico-legal information which may include: correspondence from the applicant, correspondence from the aviation medical examiner, hospital medical records, lab results, radiology reports, diagnostic testing, consultant reports, police reports, court records, treating physician reports, doctor’s office records, medical flight test results, occupational color vision test results, and other various medico-legal documents.
Follows AAM protocols in evaluating airman medical cases to determine applicants' eligibility for issuance, modification, or denial of an airman medical certificate in accordance with applicable regulations. Examines and ensures airman's medical file is sufficiently documented for consideration by the FAS.
Interprets and reconstructs medical case histories to determine the need for any additional information that is required, ensures the procurement of the additional information, and ensures that follow-up is made in writing. Additionally, incumbent is responsible for the implementation of rules, regulations, agency orders, and policies and procedures relative to the medical programs for airmen and air traffic control specialists (ATCS's).
Provides recommendations on airmen certification cases in accordance with Part 67. Prepares documentation, correspondence, reports, and briefings in his/her areas of responsibility. Responds to non-routine inquiries from airmen, physicians, medical providers, aviation medical examiners, Congress, freedom of information requests, as well as private, public, and commercial organizations. Providing support to the Office of Chief Counsel in medical certification case development.
Applies knowledge of medical conditions, treatments, medications, and their potential impact on safety in the aviation environment.
FV- G Duties:
The incumbent performs a combination of routine, multiple, and varying assignments under the general direction of the Manager, Medical Appeals Branch with assistance of the Branch Deputy Medical Officer and the Team Lead. Work is performed independently to some degree with planning time and using assigned resources to accomplish tasks, Work is typically reviewed frequently during assignments and at completion to ensure policy compliance, and alignment with the requirements of projects.
Incumbent applies knowledge of Part 67 coupled with the ability to apply airman medical standards to specific cases.
FV- H Duties:
Performs multiple and varying assignments under the limited direction of the Medical Appeals Branch Manager with assistance of the Branch Deputy Medical Officer and the Team Lead. Work is performed independently and is judged on the basis of adequacy and effectiveness of procedures, soundness of judgment, quality of decision, soundness of conclusions, and appropriateness of recommendations.
Incumbent applies advanced knowledge of Part 67 coupled with the ability to apply airman medical standards to specific cases.
FV- I Duties:
Performs multiple, varying, and complex assignments under the minimal direction of the Branch Manager and/or Medical Officer. Work is performed independently and is reviewed rarely, typically though status reports and at project completion, to ensure policy compliance and alignment with the requirements of projects and/or other work activities.
Applies comprehensive knowledge of Part 67 coupled with the ability to apply airman medical standards cases.
