The following are the duties at the CN-53 level. (Equivalent to the GS-13). If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position. The major duties of this position include:

- Performing economic research assignments OR primary data collection assignments requiring planning, information, assembly, analysis and evaluation, conclusions and report preparation; AND
- Coordinating projects that involve economists, statisticians, and research scientists to evaluate and interpret economic or primary data collection information; AND/OR
- Utilizing computer software systems and packages to develop and maintain databases for compiling and organizing economic, statistical and financial data and developing reports OR using computer software systems and packages to collect and develop and maintain data from primary data collections (e.g., surveys, randomized controlled trials) and develop reports.
For the CN-52 level, you must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the CN-51 level in the Federal service. (For qualification purposes, the CN-51 level is broadly equivalent to the GS-11 level.) For this position, specialized experience is defined as:
- Performing economic research assignments requiring planning, information, assembly, analysis and evaluation, conclusions and report preparation; AND
- Participating on projects that involve economists, statisticians, and research scientists to evaluate and interpret economic, market, or behavioral information; AND/OR
- Utilizing computer software systems and packages to develop and maintain databases for compiling and organizing economic, statistical and financial data and developing reports OR using computer software systems and packages to collect and develop and maintain data from primary data collections (e.g., surveys, randomized controlled trials) and develop reports.
OR
Education: You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: Ph.D. in a related field that provided you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work or a combination of education and experience.
For the CN-51 level, you must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the CN-40 level in the Federal service. (For qualification purposes, the CN-40 level is broadly equivalent to the GS-09 level.) For this position, specialized experience is defined as:
- Selecting and applying economic and statistical analysis and modeling techniques; AND
- Using analytical tools to identify and construct datasets from multiple sources OR assisting in the development of primary data collections (e.g., surveys, randomized control trials); AND
- Using statistical and econometric tools to analyze and summarize data into written, tabular, and/or graphic application for research projects; AND
- Identifying potential problems and issues based on analyses of data.
OR
Education: You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: Master’s degree in a related field that provided you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work or a combination of education and experience.
Basic Requirements
Economist Series (0110):
A. Degree: economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Statistics Series (1530):
A. Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.
