This position is located in the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Office of Field Operations (OFO), Boston Regional Office, Division of Price Programs. The incumbent is the Assistant Regional Commissioner for the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the Boston Region and is duty stationed in either Boston, MA or Manhattan, NY. The Assistant Regional Commissioner directs the Division of Price Programs and is responsible for managing the collection of data for three principal Federal economic indicators, the Consumer Price Index, the Producer Price Index, and the U.S. Import and Export Indexes. Duties include, but are not limited to:

You may not be aware, but in the regulations for agency ethics programs, there are requirements for supervisors. Section 2638.103 of Title 5 of the CFR states: Every supervisor in the executive branch has a heightened personal responsibility for advancing government ethics. It is imperative that supervisors serve as models of ethical behavior for subordinates.
Supervisors have a responsibility to help ensure that subordinates are aware of their ethical obligations under the Standards of Conduct and that subordinates know how to contact agency ethics officials.
Supervisors are also responsible for working with agency ethics officials to help resolve conflicts of interests and enforce government ethics laws and regulations, including those requiring certain employees to file financial disclosure reports.
In addition, supervisors are responsible, when requested, for assisting agency ethics officials in evaluating potential conflicts of interest and identifying positions subject to financial disclosure requirements.
For an Economist:
A. Degree: Economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting or calculus;
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Examples of qualifying experience include (a) individual economic research assignments requiring planning, information assembly, analysis and evaluation, conclusions and report preparation; (b) supervisory or project coordination assignments involving a staff of professional economists, and requiring the evaluation and interpretation of economic information; or (c) teaching assignments in a college or university that included both class instruction in economics subjects and one of the following: (1) personal research that produced evidence of results, (2) direction of graduate theses in economics, or (3) service as a consultant or advisor on technical economics problems.
For a Statistician (Economics):
A. Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education , or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology;
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -courses shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.
In Addition:
Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-13, in the Federal Service. This experience must have equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and ability to successfully perform the duties of this position. This experience must demonstrate a thorough understanding of economic principles and theories and a wide knowledge of current economic factors and their implications. Examples of qualifying experience include:
(1) the organization, direction, and coordination of complicated and important economic research programs; or
(2) marked technical competence in economics research including the development of new methods of economics analysis, or new economic knowledge of value to Government officials responsible for important decisions on economic programs or services. Candidates must have demonstrated in their work experience or training that they possess, or have the potential to develop, the qualities of successful supervision.
